Portia?

Hello,

I love this name, and Shakespeare for that matter, and am doing my best to get DH to at least put it on our "maybe" list since he already said a firm "NO" to my other favorite name: Evangeline nn Eva. 

DH thinks that people will think we named our kid after a car and we'll have to always explain it.  

I know theres a mom here who has a daughter named Portia - whats your response been to the name?

Opinions welcome!  Or other name suggestions!

I like it. It has a regal, but not pretentious air to it.

Not horrible, but definitely NMS. Has a pretentious air to it, IMO.

I absolutely LOVE this name because of Shakespeare. I know what you're hubby's saying, though. That's one thing that keeps me from using it, myself. I do love other Shakespearean names... Rosalind, Ophelia, Juliet...

NMS and I immediately think of the car, then Portia de Rossi.  But I do like your personal connection to it, re: Shakespeare Buff.  Too bad about Evangeline - I love that name!

I love Portia. I have mixed feelings because of ignorant people and the car association, though...

This is almost exactly what my DH said about Portia..."like the car? ...and isn't that Ellen's wifes name?"  Sigh.

I KNOW about Evangeline, I ABSOLUTELY love that name! His argument is he feels its hard to pronounce!

When I see Portia I immediately think Shakespeare (but I'm a drama and English teacher).  Especially, with this spelling.  If you spelled it Porsche then I'd think of the car.   I also think of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella.  It was the name of one of the stepsisters, but she was also named for the Shakespearean character.  I say go for it.

My daughter is Portia. There has been a few times where people have said "like the car?" But I usually give them the side eye and say in my very best "you're an idiot voice," "No, like the character from 'The Merchant of Venice.'   Or if I`m in a good mood I say ``No, like that hot lesbian, married to that funny lesbian who dances. `` And then I explain that I love the play and that`s where we actually got the name. It really hasn`t been that big of a deal, plus I take it as an opportunity to educate the semi-illiterate masses.

I think of her now too, and I also LOVE Evangeline.
