High-Risk Pregnancy

GD ?

I'm 30 weeks and recently diagnosed with GD.  At what point do they begin insulin, where would your numbers have to be at?

I'm having difficulty with my morning/fasting numbers and just wanted to know what could be coming down the road for me.

Re: GD ?

  • If you can keep your GD diet controlled, you don't need insulin shots.  Are you eating a snack at night?  I have found that if I eat a snack between 8 and 10pm that my morning fast number is usually inline.  I was switched to testing two hours after meals after I changed hospitals.  The goal I was given here is fasting 100 or lower and 2 hrs after meals 120's and below.  I have found that I also need to keep very well hydrated (tons and tons of water) and that different foods set everyone off.  For me, it seems to be orange juice and bread.  What helped to diet control myself was to keep track of what I ate at meals and what my blood sugars were.  I hope this helps Smile

  • Thanks for the tips!  I did a little experiment with the night snack over the weekend.  When I did not have a snack at bedtime, that's when I got my fasting number in the morning under the 95 recommendation.  Last night I had the snack, and I was back up to 104.  I even included a piece of cheese.  Definately a game of trial and error.

Most of the time I'm waking up at 4 or 5 in the morning literally starving.  Anyone else?

I see my OB tomorrow.  Hoping she likes where my numbers have been.  I've been following the diet strictly since I saw the diectician.  Just hoping to get this little guy here safely.  (I had a loss at 34 weeks last January..my beloved Mallory Elizabeth....)

  • I am not sure since I have not met with a nutrionist yet...but I am pretty sure they don't want you skipping the bedtime snack...I would bring it up with your OB tomorrow.

  • My OB thinks I'm probably type 2 undiagnosed, but since I've never had a GTT outside of pregnancy, they consider me GD.

    My doctor's magic numbers are:
    Fasting: Under 90
    2-Hours Post Meal: Under 110

Anything higher than that = insulin. I had to start insulin around 5 weeks with this pregnancy because my fasting numbers were 95-100 (they had me start testing my blood sugar as soon as I found out I was pregnant). My post-meal numbers have been really, really good throughout my entire pregnancy - especially considering how high they were with my last pregnancy.

My doctors are ok with 1-2 high numbers per week, but if they notice more, they'll start insulin before the meal that's giving me problems.

  • I was diagnosed with GD at 18 weeks.  The last 7 days my fasting levels were above the 90 cutoff they gave me.  I talked to my dietician today and she is giving me 3 more days and if they do not drop I have to meet with the endo about insulin. Post-meal #'s are perfect.

    Good luck!
