caffeine while BF and migraine help!

I have had a 4 day migraine and it's not getting any better. Any advice on how to get this under control? I have been taking ibuprofen.

Finding mixed reviews on whether or not caffeine is safe. I haven't had any caffeine at all since DS was born, but did drink it while I was pregnant. He's just very sensitive about foods I eat so I'm a little worried about how it will effect him. I'm wondering if it will help with the migraine.

I'll take any/all advice! Tried to get into the Dr. today to see if they could help, but they can't see me until Thursday.

Re: caffeine while BF and migraine help!

  • Are you trying to see your PCP or OB?  I would try the other doctor if the one you tried first can't get you in today.  And if they can't see you I would think about going to urgent care.  A 4 day migraine is probably going to require something a little stronger than ibuprofen.

  • I can't help with caffeine with BFing, but what about salt?  Potato chips are one of my go-to's with migraines and seem to help (kind of works the same way as caffeine by constricting your blood vessels).  I hope you feel better!
  • I drink coffee and tea while nursing. Hope you feel better soon!

I called my OB after calling the PCP and they said it's too far out postpartum to be related so I need to go to my PCP.

I will try the chips and I'm definitely going to try caffeine as well. I think if things don't get better I will go to urgent care later.

That is frustrating!  I hope you feel better soon!  Let us know how you are doing.

Ditto. No way I could have survived without doing so!

  • I've had a migraine for the past four days too...it's awful.  Even my migraine meds aren't cutting it this time.  I'm thinking it must have something to do with the change in weather???

Anyway, I would definitely try some caffeine and see what your PCP says you can take.

  • Also, make sure you are getting plenty of water. I always got bad headaches while nursing if I didn't get enough water.

This. Also, I didn't drink caffeine for about the first three months, but now I just try not to have more than one or two caffeine drinks a day, and never after 2 or 3. It never used to affect me, but now will keep me up all night if I drink it too late in the afternoon.

  • This is what kellymom says about caffeine.  I drink a cup of half caf coffee in the am and sometimes early afternoon.  I try to drink my morning cup right after DD nurses so that by the time she's ready to nurse again, some of the caffeine has left my system.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • Thanks everyone for the advice! DH just ran out to get me some caffeine. It could definitely be the change in weather, and I have been drinking water all day, so I really hope it helps!

  • Migraines suck huge! My Dr gave me percocets to help which is safe while BF. i still limit them as much as possible but some days the pain is just too much.  They will at least numb the pain enough to function.  Do you think they maybe tied to the weather going up and down right now?  I would take some zertec and see if that helps any. Caffine is safe in moderation and like the pp said make sure to drink lots and lots of water.  You basically have to double the recommended water intake.  Hope you feel better soon.   I am trying to wean my DD after 14 months of BF.  The thought of being able to take migraine meds again sounds so wonderful!!
