1 hour GD test question

When I was pregnant with G I took the test late in the afternoon, and didn't fast. I passed and had no problems and a normal size baby. This time my doctor had me fast for the 1 hour and I failed. I've had no other indicators of GD, and the baby is measuring only slightly ahead (less than a week).

All of my research so far this morning has said that fasting isn't necessary for the 1 hour test and I'm almost positive that's why I failed.  So did you have to fast for the 1 hour GD test? Did you pass or fail?

Re: 1 hour GD test question

  • I took the 1hr twice while pg. I was told "no sugary cereal for breakfast." my tests were early in the day, passed both.

But aside from no sugary cereal, you ate breakfast and passed?

My doctor told me to eat protein for breakfast and I did and passed. I ate eggs and bacon YUM!

I was told the same thing because I saw the same midwives.  :)  They said eat something high protein, low sugar.  Don't have fruit loops and OJ.  I ate high protein no sugar and I still failed, but my endocrine system is whack so I wasn't surprised.  I passed the 3 hour though, no problem.  MOST people who fail the 1 hour pass the 3 hour.

  • I did but we have the same doctor ; )

Also, come to find out I went from my annual a couple of weeks ago and they wanted to do blood work that they normally do when you hit your 30's but wouldn't do it since I had had breakfast. Too bad no one told me to fast or I would have!

Yeah. That's what I thought. I'm going to make them give me the 1 hour again.

  • I did not fast and failed the one hour miserably. I did pass the 3 hour though which I did have to fast for.

  • I fasted and passed the first time and then around 35 weeks there was sugar in my urine, so I had to take it again and I failed and I failed the 3 hours test (fasting both times.). I had to take my blood sugar 3 times a day after that and it was always low and in the hospital they had to give me sugar water and popcicles because my blood sugar was so low...so, I dont trust those tests AT ALL.

  • I didn't fast. My doctor told me to eat a normal breakfast, but nothing sugary. She wanted to see how my blood sugar was on a normal day to day basis. Fasting doesn't demonstrate that.

    I passed.

  • my doc said not to eat for 2 hours before drinking the glucose.

  • Both times, I ate eggs only for breakfast and took the test first thing in the morning. I passed both times, although I passed out during the test with my first pregnancy.

Hi there. I would definitely ask for the non-fasting test, and even consider using gummi bears instead of the glucose solution.

I wrote a post about it awhile back here, and it has some very good research to back it up, in the event you're interested.

  • No fasting. I don't really think there is a way to cheat the test; should one even try to? It is serious if not controlled.

I had GD with my first pregnancy; my second pregnancy I did not have it. I was able to control it with diet very easily.

Mind you, I cried when I found out, but in reality it was not a big deal. There are much worse conditions for sure.

My advice, relax. What will be, will be.

  • I did not fast for the 1 hour, but failed by only one point.  I had to fast for the 3 hour and failed miserably.  I had GD and was able to easily manage it with diet.  I was even able to eat a few bites of ice cream every day.  Most people who fail the one hour will pass the 3 hour.  I knew I was in trouble when I threw up 20 minutes into the 3 hour b/c I was so dizzy from my blood sugar being through the roof! Then I got to do it again 3 days later...fun fun!

Who said anything about cheating the test??? I was asking for other experiences because my experience the first time was completely different.

90% of my research today said that fasting wasn't necessary for the 1 hour, which was my experience the first time around.

I also didn't say that it was the most awful thing that could happen, because it's not. But because I get violently ill if I don't eat I'd rather avoid taking the 3 hour if I can. But thanks for your "advice".

  • No fasting for either girl.  Told to eat some toast with peanut butter (but make sure peanut butter doesn't have sugar in it) or some eggs.  Passed both times.

  • No fasting here either and I passed. I was told not to eat anything too sugary before. I can't remember if I had a morning or afternoon appt so no help there but I know I didn't fast, as if they could get me to stop eating when I was pregnant. Ha!
  • i don't think anyone's trying to cheat the test, they're just asking to make sure it's done correctly.  i've failed glucose tests before simply because i didn't know they were running a glucose test.  once was at a health fair--i walked in eating an apple, the nurse should have told me right there and then that i would have high blood glucose levels.  the other time was at my endocrinologist's office.  i went in for a thyroid panel, but they also ran glucose.  they did't tell me they were running a glucose test, so the sugary breakfast i ate 30 minutes before giving teh blood sample skewed the test.

  • I did not fast for the first and failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour.  I fasted for the second 1 hour and passed.
  • I was told to not eat anything for an hour or 2 before the test, and since I had an 8:00 appointment I fasted. I passed with flying colors. And I din't have any problems with the drink. Ironically, I think I am starting to have problems with my blood sugar now.

I hope you pass the next test.

  • Sorry I misunderstood your purpose. Like I said in my previous post, I did not fast either time.
  • I was told I didn't have to fast and to not eat sugary stuff. I protein loaded (eggs and cheese toast) before I went to take the test and passed.

DD was huge, but I didn't have GD.
