Claire has been the most popular spelling since the 19th century.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

Claire, I think, is the most common spelling in general, but I have 2 family members named Clair (and no Claires). The SSA puts Claire at #53, Clare at 718 and Clair isn't in the top 1000.
I think Claire is definitely the more common spelling. If our LO is a girl, she will be Clare as in Saint Clare and Ireland's County Clare. Beautiful name no matter how you spell it, I think it's really a personal preference.
Re: Clair, Claire, or Clare?
Claire. Clair is the male version.
Nothing wrong with Clare IMO, but I think Claire is more common.
Claire c-lai-re as a girl's name (also used as boy's name Claire), is pronounced clare. It is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Claire is "bright, famous". French form of Clara. Introduced to Britain by the Normans, but then abandoned. This spelling was revived in the 19th century as a variant of Clare as in Saint Clare of Assisi (13th century), founder of a Franciscan order of nuns and one of the notable saints of the medieval period.

Claire.
Clare is the Irish, male-spelling. My grandfather's middle name was Clare.
As pp have said, Clare is traditional Irish, Claire is French and Clair (as I've known it) is the male version....although I only know one male Clair.
When we chose Claire, I had understood that this is the most common spelling AND I wanted to tick off DH's Irish family.
PS: That's a wonderful name, if I do say so myself.
