Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If you have worked outside the home..

Are you happy with your current salary (or what it was if you SAH)?

I really want a raise and we havent received one in 2 years (my company has had like 10 rounds of layoffs since 2008).  We get bonuses and last years was pretty big but I'm not expecting that this year.  I hinted about it to my boss asking what do I need to do to move up - we have levels and I am a 3 - my position maxes out at a 5.  My title doesnt make sense for what I do and he said he would re-adjust it this year (meaning a promotion which comes w/ a raise).

I had my review and he didnt mention it although they never talk about money until March.  If I just get a bonus and no raise and no title change should I mention it?  I feel like I deserve one and if my bonus is less than last years I will be making less.

So say something or shutup and be happy I have a job?

  • You should always ask for more than you want so that you can negotiate closer to your number.

Find out what other level 3s make and ask for a raise accordingly.

  • I feel EXACTLY the same way.  I'm happy to have a job (since I was UE for a bit 2 years ago) but I haven't had a raise since I've been at this job - and my boss said there were salary reviews every 6 months when I interviewed, grrrr.

I work for a uber small company though and have a review this week.  I've taken on a lot of additional responsibilities this year, so I plan on outlining them all and asking for a raise.  If not, I need to get serious about looking for another position.

Bottom line is that we can not afford to have another kid until I make more money.  (My H is a teacher, so we know his salary scale.)  It just isn't possible for us to make it on just his salary or have daycare costs for 2 with mine and his.

How do I go about finding out this info?  I have a range that I "can" make for my title and I think I am on the high end.  But I also dont think I should have the title I do.

  • Forget about the title.  You can't cash a title.  I would find out what other level 3s are making at work.  Can you ask HR?

I think they would just give me that range because all the positions are graded.  I dont care what I am called I just need my position grade to go up. Big Smile

  • I am happy with my salary. Unfortunately I am part of a union so whether I work my butt off or just slide by I get the same raise. I think if you feel like you deserve a raise/bonus there is no reason why you shouldn't request one. The worst that can happen is the boss man says "no". GL!
