Hives, hives and more hives

We gave DS some asparagus for the first time yesterday and almost immediately got a rash and some hives. They went away after awhile, and then came back in full force last night. They were everywhere. The nurse on call told us to use a cold, wet cloth to help with the itching. He wasn't having any problems breathing, but of course I kept checking on him overnight because I was afraid he'd start to having breathing problems.

They came back this morning, and his Pedi's office told us to give him some benadryl. Logically, I'm fairly certain it was probably the asparagus. But there's just a tiny, illogical part of me that can't help but think it might have been the amoxicillin for his ear infection. He finished it on Friday though. But I have a Penicillin allergy, and had a delayed reaction to Sulfa drugs. I know it's probably the asparagus, but I can't help but wonder!

I'm hoping the hives will fade away by tomorrow. It just looks so uncomfortable for the poor thing! Sounds like I'm not the only one having a blah Sunday. Hopefully this will turn into a better week for everyone!

Re: Hives, hives and more hives

  • That is so scary! DD is allergic to Penicillin and her reaction occurred less than 24 hours after her first dose. Is the Benadryl helping? DD seems to be immune to it and eventually stopped breathing and turned blue so we rushed her to the ER. Once she was treated the hives disappeared really fast. I really hope they disappear for A soon.
  • That PCN allergy is no joke. I have an alert bracelet and epipen...in my nighstand, real helpful! But for A, it seems to be helping. He was pretty fussy, and just fell asleep sitting up. I had to bite my tongue from LMAO! But thanks, I hope they go away soon too. It just looks worse than it is, I'm sure.

  • I'll be honest, I don't think it's the asparagus -- I think it's the penicillin.  Justin also has a penicillin allergy, and it didn't show up until the 7th day of the 3rd time he was on it.  It's definitely penicillin and not food-based.  Hives from drugs last days for Justin.

Tyler has food allergies, not drug allergies, and while the redness and hives show up right away, they also go away fairly quickly once the food is digested and/or Benadryl is given.  I have never had hives recur when he eats or comes in contact with a food he's allergic to.

See what your pedi's office says -- but I'd be tempted to wait a few more days to give the penicillin to get out of his system and then try asparagus again.  Then maybe you can know for sure.

    Allergies  SUCK!!!!!

  • Thanks for the info/suggestion Katie. It's not like I was wanting an allergy to meds, but I just kind of had a feeling it might be something else. Even after the Benadryl, the hives are still there. Maybe I'll try some asparagus next week. It seems that, especially after being cooked, asparagus usually isn't high on the list of things people are allergic to.

As a mom to 2 kids with allergies, one drug and one food, I can say the drug allergy is infinitely more manageable.  I wish he didn't have either one!  But if he still has hives even after a dose of Benadryl, I'd say it's a safe bet it's the penicillin, because it's still in his system.  Yuck, I hate allergies.
