I am traveling to this board from the IF board, hope you great ladies can offer me some advice. Did any of you do IUI? If so, how many children did you have that cycle. Although any amount of children would be a blessing, I need to stay realistic with what we can afford and just know what to be prepared for I guess.
I have not done IUI yet, or injectables but this will probably happen our next cycle. I have heard that IUI has a higher chance of multiples than IVF. Please give me some insight...
thank you!

Re: IUI and multiples
I have concieved twice through IUI. The first was on Clomid...I only had one follie and got pregnant with one...unfortunatly, it was ectopic (I have endometerosis and my left tube was partially blocked).
I then did IUI with injectibles (Femara + Follistim). I had 2 mature follies on each side. Since I only had one tube (left had been removed with the ectopic), my RE was confident that only two of the eggs would be picked up by my tube. I got pregnant with twins that cycle.
I got pregnant with twins on my 2nd IUI/Injectable cycle. I was on Gonal F, Menopur, & lupron, triggered, and did 2) back to back IUIs. I had 3, maybe 4 (they weren't sure if it was going to catch up) follicles.
Good luck!
After 2 years, Injects, PCOS diagnosis and 2 IUI's, we were blessed with our beautiful twin girls!
Baby Girl #3!
Coming over from the TTC after 35 board. I did my 4th IUI this morning (first medicated). I was on 50mg Clomid, days 5-9, Ovidrel trigger. I had two follicles, both about 19mm.
My RE said my chances of conceiving this cycle are about 25% and if I do get pregnant, chance of twins is about 10%. He said 7% before I started taking Clomid and upped it to 10% when he saw the two follicles during my monitoring ultrasound.
it's not the IUI that increases the risk- it's the meds you take for ovulation - in my instance it was clomid.
we got pg with my first son with clomid 100mg and IUI (plus met and trigger shot) - our first cycle. I have PCOS. i only had one mature follie the day we did IUI - and I got pg - so we knew that when TTC#2 any mature follies had a good chance of becoming babies- so we were not going to inseminate if there were more than 2 mature follies... we were OK with twins- but not triplets.
I had 2 mature follies- and we got twins. It was my 2nd cycle trying - the first cycle was a bust b/c i was sick with kidney infection the week of clomid.
IVF has a little more control b/c you can just put in one embie if you really don't want multiples (though, with ICSI there is an increased chance of it splitting and having ID twins)... with IUI even if you only have 1 mature follie- sometimes one or more catch up and you don't know it until you find out you are pg with more... so there is some risk.
talk with your RE about the risks - make sure you are monitored well by ultrasound the day of your IUI, so you know how many follies there are - and what the chances will be.... if you are uncomfortable with multiples then you can choose not to do the IUI if there are more than 1, etc.
best of luck with your choices. it is a hard decision to make. Twins+ make a pregnancy a lot more risky- so it's not just about having more than 1 kid and the costs, etc- it's also about the risk of pregnancy, etc.
My first set of twins (now 5 years old) is the result of injectables + IUI.
Best of luck!
Thanks ladies for all the amazing input. I am not scared of getting pregnant with more than one, to be honest, I would prefer 2, but I would be more than happy with one. We have been trying for so long I am ready for anything. My biggest fear would be that I would have too many follicles and the dr would decide against iui. I would be heart broken.
This may be a odd question, but should I tell the dr that I would be happy with more than 1? or does that make me sound crazy?

the goal of any good RE is one baby, one pregnancy... but they will want to know what you are OK with. If you are OK with twins - your RE should know that, as it could be a decision maker...... if you are NOT OK with triplets, the RE needs to know, etc, or if you are OK with that risk, RE should know, etc.
women dealing with IF often wish for twins - since getting pg can be so hard - the idea of the "two for one" deal is appealing. So many people tell us (on this board) that they always wanted twins- and we usually roll our eyes... b/c while we love our twins (and more) it's a big risk and not something we would wish on most people... but as a fellow IF person I know the feeilngs you are having.
best of luck with your cycle!
My RE's office would not proceed with a cycle with more than 4 mature follicles. We concieved our triplets on our first follistim + ovidrel + IUI cycle (I had 4 mature follicles).
Best of Luck to you!!
My RE office also would not procede with an IUI with over 4 mature follices.
I got pregnant on our first IUI cycle using Clomid. I had one mature follicle and one almost mature follicle (which clearly matured after the IUI)
No - I don't think so! I told my RE all along I was hoping for twins! Little did I ever imagined I'd actually get them!
And just remember, even if you have more than 1 follicle it doesn't mean you'll get pregnant with even one. My 1st injectable IUI cycle I had 4 mature follicles and still didn't pregnant....and my DH has an awesome sperm count! So you just never know sometimes!

I am pregnant with Twins at 12weeks. First pregnancy. I have PCOS.
IUI one round with Gonal-F (gonadatropin) injections and HCG release. I told my doc I wanted twins on my first day with them. I think its important that they know you are open to multiples as they will be monitoring how many mature follicles you have.
Ask your doctor about your option to switch to IVF during the cycle should you have an awesome reaction to the injectables. If they know you are open to it and you can afford it, of course, it is a great thing to have on the table should you have multiple follicles. We actually had at least 5, hence the twins.
No matter what, keep believing! That is the biggest part.

Your twins are adorable. I swear I have heard their names before. Either we have a mutual friend or friend of a friend or there are another set of twins out there with those names. They are good names though, so maybe so.
I had 3 cycles of IUI and injectibles before we got pregnant with twins.
3rd time was the charm.
Good Luck!
