My doctor recommends washing with Selsun Blue twice a week and the other days with baby oil.
I think using dandruff shampoo on a baby is too harsh, I never understand when doctors recommend it.
We use Badger Balm, which is an olive oil-based balm, and wash his hair once a week or so, I use a washcloth to help loosen it. If it's greased up really well, you can usually brush a decent amount of the flakes out with a comb or toothbrush. The more grease, the better. DS2 recently outgrew his, he had it for a good two months at least.
We use this. It works and its a lot more gentile than an adult dandruff shampoo and it's not all greasy like oil. We use it for her whole body. I got it at Target. I have also used their Calendula Cream (also at Target by California Baby) and it helps to clear up any little rash or whatever. I put it on her face every night (she gets a lot of dry patches). I have also put it in her hair when the cradle cap has gotten pretty bad (before the new shampoo) and it really makes a big difference.
