Ceiling fan vs. light fixture in nursery

We need to replace the ceiling fan/light in the nursery (has a broken globe and glow-in-the-dark stickers all over it from the previous owner).

We're debating between another ceiling fan/light combo or just a light fixture. Do babies/kids need or like having an overhead fan in their rooms? I didn't have one growing up, but I love having one in my room as an adult. Opinions, please!

Re: Ceiling fan vs. light fixture in nursery

  • We're debating the same thing!  I really want to do a chandelier... but have been getting mixed thoughts about not havine a ceiling fan to circulate air-

    Oh the decisions!

  • Loading the player...
  • I've been told having one can reduce the risk of sids since it keeps air flowing in the nursery. We wanted to replace ours anyway too, so we're putting in a ceiling fan.

  • i would guess it depends on how hot and stuffy baby's room gets.  our upstairs is at least 10 degrees warmer than the first level at any time, so it would be lovely to have a ceiling fan in dd's room.  i guess that's a project for another time.

  • Like PP said I have read it increases air circulation and thus decreases the risk of SIDS. Our house is ceiling fan happy and has one in every room of the house accept the living room so the baby's room will have one.

  • Go with the ceiling fan. I had one my entire life and it so helps me breathe (I have asthma). I have noticed a significant increase in my asthma symptoms when I sleep without the fan on.

We will be installing a fan AND use a floor fan for white noise to keep the rest of the noise in the house away from the baby. Ever since I put a floor fan in my room I can sleep through almost anything my husband is doing downstairs, whereas before he had to be very quiet because I could hear everything.

  • Why not get both?  Just google chandelier light kits for fans.  You can have a ceiling fan and a chandelier if that's what you want.  We are going with a ceiling fan b/c we are in Central Florida and it is hot here and it is supposed to help protect against SIDS b/c of the circulation.
  • It'll be a ceiling fan.  DH I think has already replaced the old one in there (he's been working on this room as well as the rest of the main house for what seems like forever right now).

  • My 3 month old nephew is currently in love with staring at the ceiling fan. He will put himself to sleep watching it. I think a ceiling fan would be a good idea.
  • We have gone back and forth between a ceiling fan and a chandelier. I love the look of the chandelier and it will totally complete the look we're going for in the room...but I think the ceiling fan is more practical and we will ultimately go with that.

Like a pp mentioned, there are combination ceiling fan/chandelier sets...but they will be too big (long wise) for our regular height ceiling. I don't want people to have to duck to get under it when in the room.

  • I couldn't find a ceiling fan I liked at all. I looked at probably 20 different fans, and none looked good and were in our budget. We have a box fan that we used in that room before, and we'll probably use it with the baby too.

Instead of a fan, we put up track lighting with a dimmer switch... I have to admit, it looks AWESOME!! Way better than I expected! And the dimmer switch is fantastic! Smile

  • We are going with a ceiling fan.  Our upstairs gets very warm and the room that is the nursery in particular.

  • In both the books Baby Bargains and The Girlfriends' Guide to Baby Gear, they recommend getting a ceiling fan to help circulate the air to help prevent SIDS.  We are planning on replacing the light in the nursery with a ceiling fan.

  • We went with a ceiling fan. My husband is regretting it though. We live in a 100 year old home and he had to rip part of the ceiling down to put a box in to support one. Poor guy wants to throw it out the window.

  • The ceiling fan is what we have and I love it for the summer time with the kiddos. Helps keep them cool.

  • ceiling fan all the way...

the house we lived in prior didn't have one, and since dd sleeps best when her door is closed, it would get stuffy in her room.

the house we're in now, does have a ceiling fan and it's great for afternoon naps and when it starts to get a little warmer at night.

  • we will be doing a chandelier but also getting a small fan to put close to the crib for air circulation.

  • Ceiling fans can reduce the risk of SIDS (air circulation). If I had a choice, I would do ceiling fan. We're trying to see how much work it would be to install and wire, since we have nothing there right now.

  • I have pretty bad allergies, and I find that the ceiling fan in our bedroom seems to stir up any dust/pet hair and it makes my allergies worse.  I definitely can't sleep with it on--I'm so stuffed up by morning.  I would be concerned that a ceiling fan in the nursery would do the same thing for the baby.  Although I guess if your nursery gets really hot, a ceiling fan would be your best choice.

We have a light on a dimmer switch in our nursery, and we're going to get a small air purifier.

  • Wow, great input, gals! We've decided to go with a ceiling fan. Now to put that Lowe's gift card to use....
