Back carry

DS is 10 weeks old.  Moderate head control but still wobbly.  Can i do a back carry or should I stick to front?

Also - when did you start doing legs out?  DS seems to be uncomfortable and I'm wondering if its because he's too small still.

Re: Back carry

  • IMO, if he's not happy with it don't do it. I don't remember when I started with legs out, but I do believe it took several attempts before it was something that DD took to.

I didn't get a woven until late, so we didn't until back carries until she was sitting up.

  • I have seen ladies do back carries with a brand new nb.  I would leave that to the experts though.  I would try back carries with teddy bears or dolls and once you feel comfortable, try with LO over a soft surface (like a bed).

I started legs out when LO was pushing with legs to try to extend them when in a froggy carry (and fussy because he couldn't move them).

  • You can move to legs out whenever you think LO is ready.  For Grace that was before she turned 1m.

As for the back carry, yes you can.  Grace was 2m when we started back carries, but I spent alot of time practicing before I wrapped with her.

The key is to make sure that the fabric comes over the back of their head just a little bit (maybe an inch or two above their neck) to ensure that their head is supported.

  • I did back carries with DS at 6 weeks.  But it was a slow learning process and I backed off when he got frustrated or fussy.  If you want to give it a go, I suggest practicing with a stuffed animal so you can figure out what to do with the fabric before balancing a kiddo on your back. But, I found it much easier to wrap a little guy than it is now when he wants to jump off my back!  There are plenty of youtube videos out there on backwrapping a baby with no head support.
