Im trying to figure out if its safe to take Slippery Elm Bark while breastfeeding? Does anyone know??
I have a 2 year old that has been running fever and has a cold.. I have a 11 day old baby who I really dont want to get it.. But I feel as if im starting to come down with a little sinus stuff..
I have herbal stuff for a cold that I know works wonderful at knocking it out.. I know everything thing in it is safe to take while breast feeding EXCEPT for the Slippery Elm Bark.. Im not sure of!
I have searched and searched for some answers on this and I find some say yes its safe.. Others say no..
I do plan on asking my midwife or trying to get a hold of some one who knows.. But it being the weekend I may not have much luck.. Just wanted to get a head start on this mess if it was trying to start!
TIA!
Re: Slippery Elm Bark
Yes it is. Slippery Elm is actually one of the safer herbs to use with children or while breastfeeding. Don't overdue it though because, as with any herb, it should be used in moderation and don't use it for more than a week(same rules as you would use with drugs basically). The worst thing that could happen is that you will get diarrhea if you have to much of it.
The properties of Slippery Elm are as follows "A sweet, mucilaginous, laxative her with a fenugreek-like odor. It soothes and lubricates tissues, draws out toxins, and promotes healing." (Encyclopedia of Herbs)
Hope this helps! And I hope that you and the baby stay healthy!!
