Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Thoughts please.

I'm gonna try to keep this short but we all know I ramble. Luke loves his hands. Plays with them all the time and of course sticks them in his mouth. He does that with toys also. He also likes to touch his face and rub his eyebrows with his thumb.

He also has had a spit up and gas problems since he was born. Neither seemed to make him uncomfortable so the doctor said that he didnt need to be on medication. At four months his gas seemed to really bother him. He would poop every three days and the third days were the worst. He would cry and be so unhappy until he went. The pedi told us to start juice once a day to help him go. It worked great.

So, bringing it all together. In the last week Luke will act/cry because hes hungry so of course he gets his bottle. He started playing/grabbing the bottle. Which seems normal enough. But now he will get super upset waiting for the bottle while I make it  and as soon as I give it to him he will squirm, pull, swat, and tug the bottle. It takes twice as long to feed him. Once in a while he will cry suddenly (like let our a loud cry/moan) and go back to eating. He has been eating 6 ounces since 4 months. (He's 5 months old) Now he stops at 4ish ounces. He will just keeping pulling the bottle until I take it out. Each time he burps he will just pass tons of gas.

He also poops once a day now so I dont think he is backed up. But the gas is an ALL day thing. He will just randomly wake up from naps crying and Ill pick him up and he will be okay but passing gas. He gets mylicon at a max dose.

This is getting long, sorry! My DH and I are debating. He says we dont need to call the pedi and that I might be over reacting. But I'm the one who feeds him every day. It seems to me like hes fighting his bottle, way too gassy, and its almost like hes in pain when he eats. Any ideas on whats going on? Tomorrows Saturday and I dont think its hospital worthy because otherwise everything is great. I just hate fighting him to drink and feel like it shouldnt be this way.

Re: Thoughts please.

  • What size nipple is he using?  Katie did this for awhile before we realized she was struggling to get the food out of the bottle.  As soon as we went up a nipple size, the majority of the spitting up/gas issues went away.

  • I don't think it would hurt to call the pedi, but I will also suggest checking out youtube- search for infant gas massage and there are a bunch of videos showing how to massage/bend your LO to help get the gas out. I do one on LO every night after her bath and between that and a little mylicon, she sleeps so much better. It's kind of crazy how much gas you can get out if you massage their little tummies!!

  • My son also squirms and gets upset when I settle down to give him his bottle.  He grabs at it and gets frustrated when it's not put in his mouth immediately.  He pulls it out and cries.  After a few times he settles down.  He is also up to 6 oz and I sometimes have to reheat the bottle at the end because he won't take it if it's too cold.  Heating the bottle up at the end may help him take the rest of the bottle.  If he doesn't take it all at once he usually takes the rest within half an hour.  I find letting him take his time works best for us.

     Good luck!

  • DS had this going on for about a week and a half after I had switched his nipple size, I switched him back to a size 1 and all the fussiness(pretty much what you described) had just about stopped. I guess he wasn't as ready as I had thought for the bigger size! Oops :/ But, I also brought him into the pedi because he wasn't as fussy as he had been, but was still not his usual happy self. He ended up having an ear infection that I never would have even guessed because he had no "obvious" symptoms, especially since I had switched the nipple size. The pedi said the fussiness was most likely the ears, but could have been a combo of both things. I wouldn't have even called if it weren't for that new mommy worry wart in me! It never hurts to give the doc a call :)

This.. if that formula isn't pouring into Max's mouth, he won't eat and he will throw a fit about it.

  • I just read your blog post about him choking on his spit and it happening multiple times.  I would call the pedi and get it checked out.
