Anything to avoid eating night before c-section?

Went in for my 38 week appointment today and the little booger is still not head down so it looks like my c-section next week is a go!  I'm feeling much better about it after talking with friends, coworkers, etc. and your comments have been helpful too!

One more random question: I can't eat anything after midnight the night before my early morning procedure.  I keep joking with DH that I need to eat a fabulous meal but is there anything I should avoid?  And, not that I'm obsessed with eating or anything (haha!), when will I feel up to eating in the hospital?  When I had DD vaginally I went into labor late afternoon and had her early the next morning.  Since I had skipped dinner I was starving for breakfast.  Just wondering...

TIA!

  • I also had an early morning c/s and I do not remember avioding certain things.

You will want to eat immediately, but you won't be able to.  They let me drink little sips of water and I still threw up b/c I was drinking my sips too fast.  My procedure was around 11 and I think I got to eat Jello around 8pm?  It was the most delicious thing I ever ate!

  • I would think you might want to avoid any food that gives you bad gas or hurts your stomach. I had an unplanned c-section and didn't eat anything but juice and popsicles for the 42 hours I was in labor. When they told me after the c-section that I had to wait to eat until I passed gas, I think I cried. And I tried really hard to pass gas, lol. That first meal was awesome, though. The nurse recommended I eat something light and I totally ignored her--I was too famished. It was the best grilled cheese sandwich ever.

  • I had my c/s around 6:30am and they didn't allow me to eat for 24hrs. b/c I continued to puke everytime I tried to even drink water.  I don't do well coming out of anesthesia, though.  I don't really remember feeling like I was starving, though.  Just really thirsty.
  • I agree with PP-don't eat anything that might upset your stomach or give you gas. I'd stick to bland, non-bulky food (e.g, no salad, mexican). Also, and this is probably TMI, but I wish someone told me--try really hard to go #2 before your c-section. I had an unplanned c-section (i knew I'd have a c/s but didn't know it was going to be that day) and had eaten a lot the night before. I didn't go #2 before but felt like I could have--I just didn't want to do it in the small bathroom in L&D where I was being monitored and that other people were waiting to use, which was stupid, I know. After the c/s, I had to go to the bathroom so bad but couldn't b/c of being in bed, and then I got terrible constipation from the pain meds. Needless to say, when I finally felt the urge to go again nearly a week later, it was the worst part of my recovery.
  • I had some good Chinese food the night before mine. You won't be allowed anything but liquid/jello until you pass gas so eat something you love!

    good luck!!

  • I had a scheduled morning Csection.  Eat up!  I had a normal meal and was fine.  I agree with the previous posters.  Nothing to eat except a liquid diet for 24 hours after the section and then you may be constipated for up to a week.  Eating is not as pleasant after as before, so live it up!

  • i sent you a PM!

i had an unplanned c/s, so no advice from my OB about what not to eat. it's strange reading that others were told not to eat until they passed gas, no one told me that at INOVA Alexandria. but i also had pretty craptastic care there too, so, not surprised.

like pps have said, avoid spicy foods and foods that take a long time to digest. i ate a lot of oatmeal when i was in labor and if i ever do it again, i'll have a supply of hard boiled eggs for the protein (though eggs can sometimes give you gas too!).?

make sure you get a hard "cough pillow" for use after your surgery. a friend who is a nurse at another hospital said they give them to all their c/s moms (INOVA didn't give me one). press it into your abdomen when you cough, laugh, use the bathroom for #2, etc. it helps with the feeling that your incision is about to burst, which many women experience.?

  • I'd just try to stick to something as healthy as possible....whole grains, lean protein, fruit, water...and try to stay away from anything that can make you really full or gassy.  I had a scheduled c/s and just had a light dinner the night before.  I had a piece of whole grain toast early in the morning (my c/s was in the afternoon).  In recovery that night I didn't have anything except ice chips and water (and to be honest, I was pretty tired, so I didn't even care about eating).  The next day I had a liquid breakfast and lunch, and then a normal dinner.  I tried to pick foods that would be kind to my digestive system and as healthy as possible and had zero problems with going to the bathroom or having an upset stomach during recovery.
