Provera newbie - a Few Questions

So, I'm currently waiting for AF so I can get some bloodwork done before beginning treatment to TTC#2!! This wait is getting SO long....

My cycle can easily be 100+ days, so if AF doesn't show her ugly face by the 29th, I was told to call the RE's office. So a few questions (because the wait is killing me and I'm wanting to get this over as soon as possible):

  • How many days do you take Provera?
  • Do you usually have to go in for an ultasound or anything before getting the Rx?
  • I see that some posters below take 2 weeks AFTER the medication is taken to get AF!! Is that the norm?
  • Will AF be regular? Lighter? Heavier?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Provera newbie - a Few Questions

  • I think provera is 10 days, but this can vary from dr to dr.  Some ppl get AF towards the end of taking it, some ppl take a couple of weeks after.  In my experience w/ it, I started 2-3 days after the last pill.

I typically did have an u/s before provera, just to confirm anovulation.

And AF heaviness just depends on how thick your lining is, which is usually dependent on how long it's been since your last AF but not always.

    GL to you!

  • I've taken provera many times. My RE always prescribed it for 10 days, but my GP recently prescribed it (to end a 100+ day cycle) for 7 days. The only difference was that it took a little longer for AF to arrive. After a 10-day course of provera AF shows up three days after the last pill, like clockwork. I have no idea what the norm is, but yes, I've heard that it can take as long as two weeks.

I always had u/s before taking it when my RE prescribed it, but when my GP prescribed it she just did bloodwork to make sure I wasn't pregnant. The one time my RE was not able to do an u/s, he prescribed me prometrium instead, which is safe for pregnancy but would have the same effect as provera if you're not pregnant.

Sometimes it's been heavy and sometimes not. This last time, after the 100+ day cycle, it was painful but not heavy.
