Hi there! I went in for another ultrasound today and then to meet with my new peri. Little L was looking good during the appointment. It was super cute when she yawned. She is now breech... I'm assuming that she decided that since she's not coming out naturally to give up on being good and head down. Oh well.
The ultrasound confirmed that the vasa previa condition is still there, which isn't surprising becaues vasa previa rarely moves and because it was only a week since my last ultrasound. They didn't give me a measurement, but it was confirmed that my cervix remains long and closed.
I then headed over for my appointment with my peri. He went through a list of questions about my history and whatnot. Then, we started talking about vasa previa. Apparently, they don't always hospitalize, and they target between weeks 35-36 for c-section. Given that I am a half hour away from the hospital, though, they will likely hospitalize me, but my guess is it wouldn't be until at least 32 weeks. All of the timing for hospitalization and c-section (and potentially for the steroid shot because apparently, they don't do steroid shots for lung development after 35 weeks) will depend on whether I begin contracting and on my cervical length.
They also mentioned that they don't typically do amnios to check on lung development typically because of the risk of breaking the bag of waters, which could cause the blood vessels to rupture. They will do them if there is a critical need, though.
To that end, they want me to come in to the fetal imaging center at the hospital for a weekly ultrasound to measure my cervical length. (Vaginal ultrasounds are the only thing permitted to be used for cervical length in cases of vasa previa... in fact, I'm not supposed to have any vaginal checks of any kind other than through ultrasound with this condition now). I will also meet with the peri every other week and with my OB every week. At my weekly OB appointments, they will put me on the fetal monitor to check for contractions.
So, I feel pretty good. It seems like they are monitoring me appropriately and have a good handle on the situation. Other vasa previa ladies, what are your thoughts?
Re: Vasa Previa Update
It sounds like they have a good plan with close monitoring and early hospitalization. I'm so glad that you have a good team working for you. It seems like it never gets easier for us gals but little L will be more than worth the wait. I'm no stranger to long term hospitalization with my preterm labor and advanced cervical dilation so please feel free if you ever want to talk. I certainly understand how it is to be a very active person and then feel incarcerated in a hospital room. I wish you the best of luck and will be thinking of you. I'm not sure what hospital you will be at but we have some pretty terrific ones around here and some incredible NICUs if needed.

It's funny you say this because my husband was pushing me to switch to the new Providence hospital in Novi since that is pretty close to where we live. I told him I didn't want to change because they didn't have a high-level NICU there (their Southfield location does, though). I told him that I was staying with my OB and delivering at Beaumont because I wanted access to their NICU should I need it. This is really something I didn't want to happen, but I had to say to him, "Na, na, na, na, na... I told you so!"
I totally understand. I picked my OB because she delivers at St. John Main which has a level III NICU and this was before we even knew we had infertility problems. DH says I worry too much. I work in the health care industry specifically Providence Southfield but I worked at Beaumont before that. You are in good hands.
Margaux was born in Montreal, at the Royal Victoria hospital. Here's the scary bit... She WASN'T a section! I was being watched for IUGR because of my fibroids and her two-vessel cord, and they missed it! I delivered at term, and they discovered the vasa previa just after she was out and fine. ><
STILL, she made it to term, was out, and fine. I'm sure you guys will have the same result!
