I just got back from my endocrinologist and I am now on insulin for my GD. It seems like I can manage anything in the afternoon or evening but my fasting and breakfast numbers are higher than they'd like.
They now have me on 2 units before breakfast and 2 units before dinner.
At this point whatever I need to do to keep the baby safe and healthy I'm going to do, no questions asked.
After the initial frustration and a little bit of sobbing this morning I realized that it truely is necessary. As it is now, I can't even have a piece of toast with an omlette in the morning without it spiking my sugar. My dietician gave me a number of around 130 grams of carbs a day and on days that my sugar stays within my normal range, I'm WAY below that number. To me, that doesn't translate to a healthy diet so, this is what is needed to be healthy for baby.
If you're taking insulin, has the amount increased later in your pregnancy or have you been able to stay about the same?
Thanks for listening!
Re: XP: Officially on insulin for GD
I'm Type 1 diabetic, so my situation is a little different, but yes the amount has increased, and has continued to increase throughout the pregnancy. However, my body makes no insulin so not sure exactly what the difference is between my situation and GD. However, 2 units isn't a big deal and honestly it isn't too hard to manage. Be happy that yours will likely go away once your LO is born...I'll be on insulin forever
Hang in there!
what does 2 units work out to be? Are you on humulin or humalog?
I'm still playing with my insulin numbers here because my fastings are still in the 120s
(although all my other numbers, including breakfast, are gorgeous)
I'm on humalog. My fasting today was 124 but had been staying anywhere from 93 to 106. Breakfast is usually kind of high (130s). Today was my first morning with insulin at breakfast so, we'll see.
ETA: Today's breakfast number was 117. It's in range so, I'm happy.
Same here, 2 units is nothing.
I was put on Insulin to control my fasting sugars. I am able to control everything else as well with diet alone.
I found that my Insulin had to be increased just about every 3 weeks as LO had a growth spurt. Usually this increase was only by one unit at a time. They warned me my numbers could go crazy as soon as I hit 35wks, and sure enough just like clockwork they did.
