F/U Pumping in a bathroom at work

so after great disscusion on FB about this topic after I posted in my status about it...

A) another friends husband who is also army confirmed that YES even the army has to provide a space OTHER than a bathroom for her to pump

B) my cousin who works at the Pentagon said they have private (keycode entry) lounges attached to each bathroom for nursing mothers

C) numerous posts providing the laws/regulations that were pass in March of 2010 requirering all employeers to provide space and time for nursing moms to pump (other than a bathroom)

I'm hoping that maybe this mom will take the information I left for her and speak up. If I were pumping I know I would! Right to HR I would go...

I did get one "warning" from a friend that said not to make to big of a stink out of it or i'd be blacklisted... fantastic!

  • Thanks for the update. I couldn't stop thinking about that poor mama. I can't believe they told you not to make a big deal about it! It is a big deal, I was trying to find out last night what would happen to an employer if they didn't comply.
  • FWIW, DH also works for the army as a civilian(at a place that employs a similar variety of military, non-military, and contractors), also in MD(probably 2-ish hours from you, looking at the map)--and one of his coworkers who had a baby a few months ago is encouraged to pump, given space to do so, and even allowed to take slightly longer lunches so she can go off-site to BF her baby at daycare at least once a day.  It's definitely not a "oh, we don't have to do that" thing, there.  I suspect the encouragement from coworkers may be in part because there's also a bunch of new daddies in their division...including DH's boss, who was singing the praises of co-sleeping and how it lets him and his wife sleep better since their LO was born.

That's awesome, I know if it were my division I could go to our Deputy Director since he just had a baby not too long ago, our PEO's HR, and probably make it happen. I'm going to give my direct supervisor a break and think that she's just not up to date with her information.
