Stupid question but is Caesar Dressing ok?

I feel like I had read somewhere that it isn't ok because most Caesar dressings have raw egg in them. It's my hubby's birthday and we are supposed to be going to Red Lobster for dinner tonight and I LOVE their Caesar salads... am I allowed to have one as my meal due to the dressing?? Has anyone run into this themselves?

  • well, i'm vegan so i haven't run into this one personally, but i would imagine that caesar dressing from a bottle like you buy at the supermarket would probably be okay and help you get your fix.  i would avoid the freshly-made kind with raw egg.

  • It's totally fine. Any bottled Ceasar is fine and I'm sure the dressing at any chain restaraunt is bottled as a result.

Even if it is "fresh" dressing made in the restraunt they at the very least used pasteurized egg.

There's no way for liability reasons they'd ever use otherwise.

  • I always ask the restaurant if they use raw egg, if they say yes - why take the risk? Most likely, they use a bottled dressing at Red Lobster, but I would check just to make sure.

This.  I used to waitress at Red Lobster and their caesar comes from a bag, no raw eggs :)

  • You should be fine. I have been having Caesar during my pregnancy and all is good. And being a chain restaurant I am sure it is fine. Nothing you need to worry about. So enjoy!

  • I have it on my salad all the time if I get it when I go out. They use the stuff from a bottle so I doubt there are raw eggs.

  • So far, most restaurants I've seen list "contains raw egg" when it does, if that makes sense. When in doubt, ask. I think alot of restaurants use the pateurized egg product (outback, chilis, carrabas, etc)

I totally read this in the book that my drs office gave me.  I had been eating caesar dressing 3-4 times a week.  I called my dr and they said it was fine.  I think they just need to update some of the reading material they hand out!
