So this is what being engorged feels like!

I have been exclusively pumping since we brought the baby home (baby lost over 10% of her birth weight and the pediatrician wanted me to pump to make sure she was getting enough, and since I am going back to work full time, she needs to take a bottle anyway). Well, I have only been able to produce between 2-4 ounces every three hours, Until this morning. I woke up to horrible breast pain, and was finally able to get out a good 8 ounces!! I guess after 10 days the milk is finally in! Phew, I had no idea how being engorged was going to feel. No mistaking that!

  • WOW I think 2-4 oz every couple of hrs at this stage is amazing! Then to get 8 oz at one sitting! I really hope I'm able to do that! I'm sorry you're so engorged, I can't imagine how painful that must be. Congrats on making so much milk though!!

  • If baby was nursing, they would probably be taking about 2/2.5 oz at a feeding, so that sounds pretty good! When I was engorged, I had to pump once, and I also got 8 oz! So nice for the freezer, but so not nice for my painful boobs!

  • Yeah, we are giving her around 3oz on demand, which is usually every 2-3 hours (if it is before every two I try to wait it out... So those 2 ounce pumping sessions hurt a little bit. If we give her 2 oz, she still shows hunger signs.
  • Yes being engorged is awful! It lasted 3 days for me, but I think usually it is 1-2 days.   Hot showers, massage, and then frozen cabbage leaves after feeding (or pumping in your case).  Hope you feel better soon!
