My flameful thought about short hair

I think the majority of grown women look better with short(er) hair. I think long hair is really hard to pull off and make look right.

LD, post a picture!

    Yes.  Especially if you're naked.

  • Perfect example is Kyle on Real Housewives of BH.  I mean, her hair is beautiful, but it is waaaaay too long!

  • See, I think short hair on older women just makes them look older and more unattractive, especially if it's not done right.

  • Wow I TOTALLY disagree.  I think short hair doesn't look good unless you have a GORGEOUS face.

  • I think long hair shot through with grey is horrible and makes a woman look older.  Unless it's gone all grey (and is still thick and healthy), then that's better.

  • I think it's really about your hair and the shape of your face. My mom has really fine hair and chin length looks best on her. Short hair on me makes my face look so much rounder because it's really thick.

  • JB, yours looks full and thick. I despise stringy thin hair that's long. And I don't mean everyone needs super short hair. I just mean that not everyone should have halfway down their back hair. I think the majority of women look best with shoulder length or shorter.

And older people with wiry hair they wear long? Not a good look.

  • E- I have to take a picture of this HAG I work with. her hair is salt and pepper, wavy and gnarly (and she doesn't wear a bra, hanes her way sweatshirts with wolves on them and men's dickie pants with velcro shoes- not that has anything to do with hair just adding to the visual)

  • This is pretty much what my hair has been like for ages, plus an inch or two on occasion. I don't really think it makes me look older- if anything I think I look old with long hair. I was 41 1/2 when the picture was taken.

I think really long hair on older women looks like they are trying too hard to look like they are in their 20s.

  • You sound like my mom :)  She says the older you get, the shorter your hair should get.  She can't stand when women in their 50s have long hair.

  • I think short hair makes you look like you gave up or feel the need to be efficient in place of attractive.  Understand that feeling, but it isn't for me.
  • Hmmm...there are a lot of stylish short hair styles. I think the same about most long hair!
  • I totally disgaree. If it's long and unkempt it won't look good but same goes for hair if it's shorter. And it seems like sometimes people think having it short means you should not do anything with it to style it...not true! I have long hair though so clearly I am biased! But I "do" my hair so it's not just long and blah...and I get regular trims (every 5 weeks to be exact) to try to keep it as healthy as possible.

  • I don't really think age has anything to do with it.  I think it just depends on the shape of your face and the quality of your hair.

That being said, I've been thinking about chopping mine.  It's medium length now but I feel like looking sassier so maybe I'll go get it cut.

  • Short hair is a LOT of work...grows out too damn fast.
  • I feel MUCH sexier with long hair and think most women look more attractive with long.   Short hair does nothing for me at all.
  • I think it depends on what you mean by "short". I see what you mean in that many people look better with a style to their hair, which is usually shorter or medium length styles, but there are also many people who just look like they should have longer hair and it looks great on them regardless of age (think Jennifer Aniston). I see what GHM means though about *some people with long, limp hair that just have it long to have it long and it really would look much better with some shape and style to it.

All in all, I think it depends on the person and the hair/style.

  • I've had my hair all lengths.  I think a little shorter than shoulder-length works best for my curls.
  • I think it really depends on the face, the hair type and the woman's personality and willingness to keep up a style.  I dont' think long, stringy unkempt hair looks good on anyone, regardless of age.  And I don't think short hair necessarily looks good on all older women. I definitely have no plans to cut my hair short when I get to a certain age.  I might have to work harder to maintain it, but I'm not really keen on the idea of age dictating how I wear my hair.

funny, I think the exact same thing of long hair that is usually pulled into a ponytail or bun. There is a huge range of short. There's no style short I gave up hair and very chic short or medium hair.
  • I agree with those who say it depends on the person. I look awful with hair longer than shoulder length. My hair is fine and thin and just gets stringy, limp and ugly if I let it get too long.

  • Short hair makes me think of helmet hair, like in Steel Magnolias.  lol.

I've had my hair short(ish) - the posh bob, I've had it medium length and I've had it pretty long.  I don't know, I'm obsessed with my hair and take care of it so I think it looks good all those ways.  Right now it's long and I love it and want it longer - like halfway down my back.  It's a few inches below my shoulders right now.

Really? It probably takes me more time and effort to do and/or maintain my short hair than it does for someone with long hair to whip it back in a ponytail. And most of the people I know with long hair have it in a headband, ponytail or under a hat 80% of the time.

This was me when I had long hair...seriously, it was almost all the way down my back when we got married. It never looked good,  though, as I have really thin hair.  Some people can totally pull it off. My SIL has amazing hair and usually wears it long. I know a ton of people who think their long hair is pretty, and it isn't. And thick hair is a definite must in my book to pull off long hair...similarly, thick hair can be really hard to make look right in a short hair style.

My short hair looks like *** when I don't fix it (I'm okay with that sometimes), but it looks much better fixed than I could ever make it look long!

  • Eh-I think it is all relative. Like PP's it is all about how you take care of your hair. I am in the phase of having long hair. I blow dry it every day, and make it look nice. I dont wear in a pony tail 80% of the time, but will put it back at times. I do however wear head bands though, just because I think they are fun. I like to play around with my hair.

I have chopped my hair in the past and have nothing against short hair, just as long as you do something with it. Many people can pull it off. Just like many people can pull off long hair.

Well you obviously don't live here.  I don't think I even own a pony tail holder.  I have one hair clip I use for boating.  Don't get me wrong, there are some great short cuts, but like the other posters said, they have to be on people whose face suits them.

  • i think it important that you do your hair whatever length it is.  do i always do mine?  no, and it looks crappier when I don't whatever the length is. (i've had everything from super short to past my shoulders)

i do think a good color is essential. even more than what length it is.  ('cause i'm gray like that)

  • Eh, my hair looks like sh!t pretty at pretty much any length (and I've had it a pixie boy cut to waist length and everything in between.) If it's going to look blah I'd much rather have it longer- it's just easier, IMO, to be able to pull it back and lower-maintenance too. It really sucked to be paying big $$$ for super-frequent hair cuts when it was short and still look crappy.

Of course, but I think the same could be said for women with short hair who think it looks great & it's actually awful. I think its all about what you personally feel good in.  I think I can pull of short or long, personally, but I prefer long b/c it's less expensive, easier to deal with and still have it look good & I look younger w/ it.  If someone randomly walks by me and thinks, "tsk; she should have shorter hair," oh well. :-)

  • This is how I feel about little girls. I don't know why people grow their little girls hair so long. It looks so cute when it's chin to shoulder length
  • Haa haa - funny how life can change your perspective on things... before I had DS#2 I always had long to shoulder-length hair and would have never considered a short cut ... then it all fell out post-birth. Yes, ALL of my hair (good times!)

Now I'm just glad to have *any* hair on my head (and I'm kinda starting to like it super-short, mainly b/c it's all I've got!!) I just hope every day that it doesn't fall out again! Stick out tongue

In general, it really is so much about face shape, rather than age though super-long hair on post middle-school/high-school women just looks silly, IMO.

  • I think it is a rare woman who can wear a short hair cut without looking mannish, boyish, or matronly.

Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.
  • I had short punky hair for a while, and am 38 & grew it out down to between chin/shoulders.  Short hair depends on the cut & thickness of hair, plus shape of face, and you really kinda HAVE to wear makeup to not look like a butch (if it's pixie cut).

Long stringy hair - unkempt and too busy to care.  My hair isn't going to be longer than my shoulders ever again.  It's thick and curly/wavy, but it's fine & wussy and takes a lot of work to not look like a mop on my head.

Just depends on the person and the cut.  Some can pull off long at any age, some just should not do it.

  • Maybe it's age, maybe it isn't, but I do think that now that I am older, I can't rock the super long hair that I used to. My hair is pretty short right now (think long side swept bangs and length just brushing the bottom of my neck) and I will tell you, it takes a hell of a lot more effort to keep up this style than it ever did my long hair. They used to refer to me as "bun girl" at work because I literally never did my hair when it was long. Now that it is short, I HAVE to do it every day, couldn't put it in a pony tail if I wanted. But you know what? It makes me want to put out the effort with everything else as well and I feel like much less of a Mom-hag these days.

Disagree.  Short hair on many women make them look cuter, younger, fresher.

Long hair on women over 40 (including me) can be touch and go.  Hair thins out, greys come in all wirey and weird and it takes a lot of effort to get the same shiney, bouncy thing going that we all took for granted in our 20s.

My hair is shoulder length right now but I am seriously thinking of chopping it off.

The thing that holds me back is that I know that sometime in the near future, I will get my hair cut short and I will never have it long again.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
