Is it OK to cut out milk when sick?

K has had a runny nose/cough for almost two weeks. Last week I cut out milk for about 4 days and just gave her water and it did wonders - no more cough and the runny nose pretty much stopped. We started giving her milk again on Sunday and she's back to having the runny nose and cough. When I was getting her stuff together for daycare tomorrow I decided to cut out the milk again.

My question is, how long can I do this without it becoming an issue? Or am I overthinking this and she'll be fine without milk for a few days?

  • We cut out milk for 4 days last week when Luke had the stomach flu and then a nasty cough. He lived Stick out tongue I was worried about it too. We did give him pedialyte for the first couple of days because he wasn't keeping anything down, after that, just water and some white grape juice that was way watered down. You could always switch to soy or almond milk if you think it's going to be an issue.

  • Hehe, thanks. :) I just don't want it to become a cycle of no milk, she's fine, we try milk again and the runny nose returns so we cut out milk again. I know winter is almost over and chances are the runny nose will end with the cold season, but I don't really know HOW important milk is on a regular basis, ya know?
  • Ava has had a stomach bug twice.  The first time she was only 2 months, so the pedi recommended switching to soy formula for a few days.  She had it again recently, and the pedi recommended switching to soy milk for a few days once she started eating again.  I would think that a few days wouldn't be a big deal -- I would just try to up calcium and protein intake.

    Agreed.

I used to nanny for a boy with a severe allergy to cows ( for reals, hamburger, milk, leather, anything) and he only ever had soy milk. He was just fine. We watched his calcium and protein intake and made sure to round out his diet other ways. I think she'd be fine.

  • My mother never let us have milk when we were sick...she always said it would curdle on our stomach and make us sick...

I have no idea if that is true or not, but we survived ;-)

  • Thanks, ladies. I've been upping her calcium and protein anyway, so it sounds like I'm on the right track. :)

And yikes to the cow allergy. Never heard of that one before.

  • some docs don't believe milk makes a child more congested... mine does- and i happen to agree- i know when i'm congested and have milk i feel worse... so i usually LIMIT milk when they have bad colds and try to offer lots of water- sometimes a little juice (but not much- i'm not a fan and don't want them to get used to it).... my boys LOVE milk so it's hard b/c they will ask for it over and over (they sign milk).

i only cut it out totally when they have a stomach bug.
