Hey bump,
I just want to know if i should be worried or not. My DD will be 14 months on the 27th Feb, we put her on the scales this past weekend and she still only weighs 18lbs.
She drinks loads of milk during the day, and eats three good sized meals with lots of snacks in between, but still she seems to not gain weight.
My MIL is a nurse and she got me a little panicked by suggesting that she might have celiac disease, as every/every other diaper has a BM in it.
I have a Drs appointment tomorrow and i am going to bring it up, but if my DD had an issue wouldn't the Dr have said something during the last check up?
Re: 14 month old and only 18lbs
Unless she's suddenly losing weight, it's probably not an issue at all. Kids growth slows WAY down around 12 months, and can plateau when they hit milestones like learning to crawl, or walk. It's very possible that she just has a very fast metabolism, or that she's just not meant to be bigger. Genetics will also play a roll- If you have smaller people in your family, she probably wont be very big. It couldnt hurt to ask the Dr, but remind yourself that *someone* has to be the smallest, just as someone has to be the biggest and that being at either end of the spectrum doesnt automatically mean that there's something wrong.
My DD was 18 lbs at 18 months and didnt even hit 20 lbs until after she was 2. She's still a skinny minny at age 5.5 and about 36 lbs. My DS isnt big, either.
Thank you both for your response, you are right of course.
Someone has to be the petite girl in class i guess!
i don't think it's a bad thing to be petite. Were you or dh small when you were younger?
My Lo is a big boy and he has about 4 bm's daily and the pedi didn't seem concerned, i just figured he eats lots of fruits and veggies so he's getting lots of fiber.
Not sure why a BM every other diaper would signify celiac. Thats not really a defining symptom of the disease. Really only a blood test can tell for sure.
Anyway, my DD was only 19lbs at her 12 month well visit. She'll be 3 in June & only weighs 29lbs. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless, like PP said, she is losing weight.
Ha, I got you all beat. DD is 20 mos old and only weighs 18.5 lbs. She's going to be petite like me. She has a great appetite, and gets lots of exercise. As long as you don't notice any troubling signs of illness, your LO is probably just fine.
I would go with your pedi on this, however different pedis in our practice have given us different responses on this issue. DD is in the 13th percentile for weight right now, but is 70th in height. DH is tall and thin, and one pedi said it's probably just genetics. But, another told us to give her whole milk mixed with carnation instant breakfast to help her gain weight. I'm doing that for a month just to see what happens.
