Last week my wife (age 29) got an ultrasound done at week 11 of our pregnancy. We were later called with the results saying we were at high risk for down syndrome (1:40). Now, my wife never had any blood work done until AFTER he ultrasound for the sequential screening. When we went in for our first OB appt. at week 7, they didn't do any blood work on her because our appt. was late in the afternoon and the lab was closing. Since the screening people never looked at my wife's blood work, is it possible this could have altered the results since they are just looking at an ultrasound and not factor on blood work?
Re: Sequential Screening done wrong?
I THINK that they can tell by measurements taken during the screening u/s if a baby may or may not have DS. If I remember correctly, if a baby measures a larger neck during the NT Scan, it MIGHT be a sign of DS.
I wish you all the best and please let us know how it goes. I think getting results like your wife did are pretty commonplace and is a reason why many opt to not to the NT scan.
Go Phils!!
Thanks for everyone's quick replies. It is much appreciated and yesterday was a very difficult day for us both. (didn't make for a good Valentine's Day morning but we made it for it at night). We have an appt. next week which will hopefully tell us more.
My wife spent most of yesterday crying and worrying and I spent a lot of time resisting a cigarette urge.
I'm glad I found this board though to talk about things
My understanding is that the NT scan can be used as a predictor on its own. However, when you add in the blood work from 1st tri and 2nd tri it is often referred to as a sequential screen, and is often considered a more accurate picture. The blood work does not have to be done at the exact same time as the NT scan, but it does have to be done within a certain time frame. The blood work you are waiting on could in theory change the statistics. This link is helpful:
