Talk to me about food throwing...again please.

Charlotte loves to throw food, even when she in hungry and likes what we are serving her.  She will throw it on the ground and then once we let her out of the chair she will either try to eat it off the floor or will stand next to DH or I begging for food from our plates.  Clearly she is hungry....but just preferes not to sit and eat.

Any thoughts on how to handle this.  Should we just be hard-line and refuse her more food unless she is sitting in her chair even if that means getting only 2 bites for dinnner?  I really hate to do that but I am not sure what else will work.  If we say "no" she does it anyway and if we completly ignore her actions she still does it.  Grrrr.

TIA

  • We are in the exact same spot as you.  I end up with DD grazing all day because she will eat a little in the high chair, and then start throwing.  If I take it away I know she is still hungry, and she is such a picky eater to begin with I hate to not let her eat when she will.  I even found that at times I can take the tray away and hand her one thing at a time and she'll sometime eat a few more bites that way.

I wish I had an answer and am interested in what other have to say.  I know at least in DD's case she doesn't understand consequences yet, but I don't want to cater to the behavior either.

  • I remember this phase. It was a short-lived one if I remember correctly. I was more concerned about getting enough food in my petite toddler so I would let her eat where she wanted (on our laps, standing while I held her plate down, on the coffee table). I also remember at your DD's age, Nora not eating much throughout the day.
  • A few times of us being the hardass parents and not letting him eat handouts while running around the house and he started to get the idea that he had to sit at the table to eat. Now he knows that he only eats at the table, and we haven't had any food-throwing incidents for a while.

  • Noah was doing this too. It is so annoying and frustrating.

I started giving him fork and spoon (before he was just eating with his hands) even if he has a PB&J. Also serve it on his plate... I think it made him feel like a big boy. Either way it worked and he stopped (for the most part) throwing his food. You might already be doing this... but if not it's worth a shot.
