eye contact question

One of my boys will only make eye contact, smile and babble when he's laying down.  This seems so odd to me and of course it makes me worry.  When I sit him upright on my lap he won't look at me.  When I lay him in my arms during the day he only looks at me occasionally.  He will look at me and talk in my arms at night...when he is supposed to be sleeping! :)  It's very different than the other two boys who love to babble at us when we sit them up and look at them.  I'm just curious if anyone else experienced this with their LO.  This also happens to be my reflux-y boy.

Re: eye contact question

  • give it some time - Gibby hardly ever made eye contact until maybe 5mo - i was so worried and had him diagnosed with ASD in my mind (it's in my family).... and then suddenly he started to make eye contact a lot and smile at me, etc.... he didn't babble until 7mo (another thing that had me worried- Gray was babbling like crazy at 3mo).

go figure - Gibby and Gray swapped and Gibby is now my talker and doing everything at or ahead of the curve - and Gray is now behind and qualifies for EI for speech.

  • I haven't paid much attention to when/where my DSes make eye contact but there's an obvious difference in their babbling/smiling. My DS2 has much worse reflux than DS1 and my DS2 hardly ever laughs and only smiles when we really work at it. DS1 will smile at anyone and anything. DS2 only just started babbling throughout the day. Like last week I mean. Before he'd just make a few sounds and clam back up. He doesn't seem like a happy baby to me. I blame it on the reflux just b/c in my mind that problem will eventually go away and then he'll be happy!

  • DH is very helpful when I stress about stuff like that.

"DS1's not making enough eye contact."
"Maybe he doesn't find you that interesting."

    "DS1's doesn't laugh very often."
"Maybe he doesn't find you very funny."

It's not the least bit helpful, but it makes me laugh. Big Smile

I figure that so long as they can do it, it'll happen more frequently in time.  If he looks at you from his back or at night, that's a good sign.  Would you thinking anything of it if you didn't have the other two to compare?  That's always my problem.  DS1 is totally normal compared to other babies.  It's when he doesn't do exactly what DS2 does that I irrationally freak out.

LMAO... Sounds exactly like something my DH would say/do.

  • Yes, my Baby A is like this.  It seems like he is just so intent on his surroundings, he's more interested in staring at "ooo... that door is pretty" or "wow, that is a shiny light".

At night, there are no other distractions so yes, he is all "oh wow, mommy... I love you.... !"
