  • Same here!  My mom said that she got us to do it by taking the top off and holding it for them to sip from, so that we understood that there's something in there to drink, then putting the top on and letting them try to get it.  The only ones I could find that had a good edge were the take and toss ones, so I'm giving it a shot at dinner time to see how it goes.

  • What type of sippy cup do you have?

By no means is DD a pro with the sippy cup, but I just kept offering it to her and tried to be patient. I also helped her by holding it up high enough so that when she did suck, water would come out of it.

  • We tried this, she drinks great from just a cup and likes it but once i put the lid on its a no go
  • Try the Nubby brand sippy cup, it has a rubber spout. My DS cannot hold it up on his own but if I hold it for him he figured out how to suck from it. I also read somewhere to take out the valve when they are learning because the water will just pour out and then once they figure it out you can put it back in. That made such a mess I only did it once, but it is worth a shot.
  • Avent has cups with handles and a nipple so we started DS on those a few weeks ago when he expressed interest in holding his own bottle and kept grabbing at our cups.  Since then we've transitioned him from the nipple to the sippy and he's doing great.

I think starting with the cup with the nipple on it helped him understand how to tilt the cup and that there is something in there to drink so when we made the transition it was easy for him.

  • There's a brand called the Tilty (sp?) cup...the bottom inside is at a 45 degree angle, so your LO won't have to throw their head way back to get the liquid to come out. Not sure what kind of spout is on it.

The thing that annoys me is that I have to fill my sippee cups almost to the top so she can get at it, and then they're kind of heavy for her to manipulate. SO I'm thinking of buying the Tilty Cup.

Also, I put 2 oz of apple juice and 3 oz of water in our 5 oz cup, just to make it a bit flavored...kind of like a sweet reward for figuring it out....and dereasing how much juice I put in it as time goes on.  I'd rather she drinks water than juice, but a little won't hurt as encouragement. FWIW, DD rarely drinks even 1/2 oz in a day from her cup.

That's what we did-- I took the top off and he started drinking from it like a normal cup. Once I put the top on, he knew something was inside. At first I had to make sure the sippy was full so that he didn't have to hold it up as much. Now he's a pro so it doesn't have to be full.

We've tried tons of sippy cups and the ones that work best for us are the Gerber/Nuk No Leak/Spill cups.
