Breastfeeding

Day 6 and milk still not in...

I was told milk should be in one breast by day 4. On day 6 and still not. I have been "stuck" at 2 oz each pumping session. I know it's a "normal" amount at 6 days pp but I have been trying to pump between 1-2 hours to increase supply as recommended by LC. I have been pumping for 30 mins or so but just realized that it seems I get all of the milk I am going to get in 15 mins. Anyone else get all they are going to get in such a short period of time? Anyone else get their milk in way later than the normal day 4 or 5 that it seems most get theirs in by?

Re: Day 6 and milk still not in...

  • Are you nursing as well, or just pumping? Pumping output is not a good gauge of supply if you are also nursing, as baby is much much more efficient at getting milk out. 2 oz at 6 days seems good to me. I can barely pump 2 ozs now. I only pump for 15 because after that I get nothing. But this is probably different for everyone.

Also, how is baby's diaper output? Is there any other reason to believe you LO is not getting enough?

From my experience, my milk didn't come in all at once. It gradually increased over time. Also, it didn't even really start coming in until day 5, but I am sure it's different for everyone.

  • If you can pump 2 ounces at 6 days pp, I think your milk is in, even if you never felt really engorged.

I stop getting milk after 15 minutes of pumping. I think that's normal. Your LC may have told you to pump longer so you're stimulating your breasts for a longer time, which tells them to produce more milk in the long run.

  • sounds like your milk is in if you can pump 2 oz? which BTW is VERY NORMAL!!

not everyone experiences engorgement when there milk comes in, I didn't.

  • Your milk is in.  2 ounces is a lot to get from pumping at 6 days post partum!!  Are you nursing?  Baby is more efficient at getting milk out than the pump.  Your body also responds better to the stimulation baby provides.  Over time, your supply will increase as baby gets older and goes through growth spurts.  Baby will signal your body to produce more milk.  You don't start out producing tons of milk.  Your body just makes what baby needs.  I wouldn't worry about pumping at this point.  Sounds like your supply is just fine and you don't want to end up with an oversupply - that causes its own set of problems.  Just nurse baby on demand and you'll be fine.

  • Unfortunately, I am not able to nurse right now. DS lost too much weight, became jaundiced and has been taking formula and BM since I was not making enough at first to meet his demand. He was not having right number of diapers.

I had a reduction so now I am to continue pumping for a bit longer to make sure I am making enough before I can go back to nursing. Sadly, he now has bottle preference and will not nurse. His weight is back up again so I am going to be working with a LC to get him back on the breast.

So weird...I totally thought I would feel when the milk came in. It's still not flowing as I pump...at times it is but mostly fast dribbling?

To get my supply to increase, I will continue for the 30 mins but sounds like it's normal to not get anymore after the initial 15 mins or so?

  • Why aren't you nursing at all? When DS got jaundice, they still let me nurse for 30 minutes every few hours. I understand that the doctors wanted you to supplement, but it's very important that you put your LO to the breast as often as possible. This will stimulate your supply way more effectively than a pump.
