Infertility

A tough decision...IVF? (long)

I am currently moving on to IUI # 2 and am thinking about doing femera + injects if RE is aggreeable. please see my siggy for my hx of treatments. I am beginning to wonder if I should move on to IVF if the next two cycles or so are not successful. I don't want to keep doing repeated IUI's for a few reasons, # 1 being cost our insurace deductiblefor IF treatments is 20 k and we are already around 4-5 k in the hole. We cannot afford to pay oop if we eat up all our insurance coverage. second, this whole IF thing just takes up your life! I'm sure you can all relate! I hate not being able to plan vacations, the stress, the depression, etc. and I fig if IVF doesn't work than nothing will and I can come to terms and move on with my life. I also know that my clinic will do I think 3 or 4 rounds of IVF for one fee with money back if no success. please any thoughts, advice, words of wisdom, ANYTHING would be helpful!!! thanks in advance!

  • I definitely think you should give IUI+injects a few tries. Much higher success rates than Clomid/Femara.

Unless age is a major concern...but I'd still probably give that one try...

TTC #1 since June 2008 *SAIFW*

TI, IUIs, IVF = c/ps and BFNs

  • for what it is worse I have pcos, did 4 IUI and am doing IVF currently.  My RE said that technically with ovulating cyclces either from oral or injections, anything less than 6 cycles could just be a flip of a coin being successful since success is usually only 15-25% per cycle.  We were ready to move on for higher rate of success after 4.  partly because of insurance, but largely emotionally, I don't think we could have continued doing many more IUI with the low success rate per cycle
TTC since 6/09 with PCOS No response to femara 4 cycles of injectibles+IUI=BFN IVF#1= started stims on 2/4 Likely ER on 2/16 and hopefully 5dt

  • I think I'd like to do that, but I understand inject cycles are a couple grand per cycle, and If I  did a couple that way, I'd potentially have used up a signifacant amount of insurance coverage and would then not be able to move on to IVF if it came to that. Either way, I think I will try 2 more IUI's with either injects or pills or both.

I tried 3 IUIs with Clomid which failed even though I responded really well. I contemplated trying 1-2 inject cycles before moving on to IVF.  But in the end, it made more financial sense for us to move to IVF now for better odds vs. later if those inject IUIs failed, since we would have to pay at least $2k OOP for those IUIs.

It's a tough decision and I wish you luck in whichever next step you choose.

  • If age is a factor I would move to IVF... I think Madelyn also mention that.

  • My RE wants me to do a total of 4 Femara cycles (mix of TI and IUI) before moving on to injectables.  Then we'll do 2-3 injects cycles before moving on to IVF.

  • Keep in mind that if you do have some IVF insurance coverage most REs will not let you participate in a shared risk program. Shared Risk tends to be for people that are totally OOP.

I did four IUIs before we decided to moved to IVF, three Clomid and one Gonal F. Good Luck.
