If your DH had varicocele surgery...a ?

Hi ladies! I know that a few of you here have DH's who have had varicocele surgery.

DH is scheduled to go in at the end of March. How long should he expect to be recuperating for?

He has a pretty intense race he wants to run a month later and he is wondering how long he'll be held up for. He has a call in to the uro surgery nurse, but I figured I would ask here.

TIA!

  • Mh's was about a year ago so I couldn't remember exactly how long it took. I asked him and he said he had activity restrictions. He also didn't think Yh would feel up to/be allowed to run in the race. I seem to remember the recovery time to be about a month to six wks.

Still ask your Uro though, you guys may have a different experience and guidelines. HtH!

  • My DH had his repaired on both sides on a Wednesday. He went back to work on Thursday but only did office work (he's a college coach so he has a very active job). Friday I had surgery and he was able to take care of me that day/all weekend. He resumed his normal work activities (again, very physical) on Tuesday...so less than a week post surgery.

  • DH had the surgery on a Friday and went back to work on Tuesday. However, it took about another 2 weeks for him to get back to normal activity. I would say about a month before he was back to 100%. He still has some random discomfort occasionally, but he is able to work out and everything. He also agreed with PP that it might be difficult to do an intense race a month after the surgery, especially if he needs to train beforehand at all. Good luck!

  • DH had the surgery on a Monday & went back to work on Thursday & it took him about 1 month to feel 100%.  Best of luck!  :)
  • Thanks girls!

Fortunately I think DH is already thinking that the race might not be a possibility. I'm sure we'll learn more the closer we get and we'll play it be ear.

    I appreciate your advice!

  • My DH had the surgery a few years ago - he went back to work after only a couple of days off and he has a very physical job and it made it so much worse - he has so much swelling and pain - he should of been on light duty - but did not want to tell his boss about the surgery - he ended up not feeling back to normal for at least a month - I would take the time to recoop and not make the same mistakes my DH did.

  • He was ok in a few days but was not able to do anything to physical for about a month.
