Has anyone here ever had pink eye while pregnant? Is it ok to take Vigamox drops? Of course this happens on a Sunday so my doc isn't available. I'm calling my pharmacist but if you have experience with this please let me know.
Internet says it's a category C so don't take unless benefits outweigh risks. But you can't NOT treat pink eye, so...?
I'm visiting from first trimester but since you've all been pregnant longer I thought I might find someone with more experience over here. Thanks!
Re: Help: I have pink eye. Vigamox ok anyone?
I had pink eye in my first trimester and they gave me drops (I don't remember what they were, it was a generic). Everything turned out fine.
Adverse events have been observed in some animal studies; therefore, the manufacturer classifies moxifloxacin as pregnancy category C. Quinolone exposure during human pregnancy has been reported with other agents (see Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, and Norfloxacin monographs). To date, no specific teratogenic effect or increased pregnancy risk has been identified; however, because of concerns of cartilage damage in immature animals exposed to quinolones and the limited moxifloxacin specific data, moxifloxacin should only be used during pregnancy if a safer option is not available.
This information comes from Lexi-Comp, a drug information resource we use in pharmacy all the time (I'm a pharmacy student working to complete my PharmD). I will say that topical products, such as eye drops, are safer than those taken orally. Vigamox is a quinolone antibiotic and quinolones in general are not recommended to be used in pregnancy. However, eye drops are usually not absorbed well into the blood stream, so there's a much lower chance of it harming your baby.
There are other antibiotic eyedrops out there. I would see if there's an urgent care center near you since you can't get a hold of you MD today and have them check you out. They could give you a prescription for something safer. And for the record, I would never take something to treat a disease state without first consulting a doctor of sometime, even if you've used it before. It's always better to get checked out first.

Thanks so much! I talked to a doc and they said the same thing second poster said: That it's better to get a different prescription of something safer. Thanks!
