Weight gain with triplet pregnancy?

Hey all!

So I'm 15 weeks tomorrow and I'm stressing about my weight gain... I hadn't gained any until around week 9 (maybe 1 pound), and since then now that I can eat sweets and all more without feeling ill, I am starving (and eating) all the time and I'm at about 15 pounds weight gain. I'm freaking out about it, and according to the weight gain charts I'm WAY above where I should be, but I know I've heard that I'll have trouble gaining later on...

What were your experiences?? Should I start limiting myself? I'm trying to walk more, but we live in WA so the weather is pretty icky out most of the time to try to take my 3 year old out with me.

 Thank you in advance!

Re: Weight gain with triplet pregnancy?

  • Have you read Dr Luke's book? I wouldn't necessarily recommend any exercise, especially anything that could put pressure on your cervix.

Anyway, your weight gain sounds fine. I gained 79 lbs by 33w (when I delivered) but much of that was fluid gain (I gained 17 lbs in 11 days at the end!)

    What does your doctor say?

  • Everyone is different and your weight gain depends on several factors - including your starting weight.  Has your doctor had any concerns?  I definitely would not recommend walking for exercise or dieting.  If you are hungry, you should eat.

  • Like others have said, everyone is different.  I think I had gained 20 pounds at around 20 weeks and by 32 weeks when I delivered I was up 66 pounds.  I was on strict bedrest at 23w5d for PTL.  I wouldn't worry about the number on the scale or exercising. Eat when you want and drink lots of water and it will all work itself out.  Right now the goal is just having healthy babies. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancySmile

  • Thanks ladies!! I'm trying to watch what I eat when I snack better, so at least it'll be good calories versus doughnuts and cake :) lol. It's tough because I was an avid runner going into this and then with my son I gained the perfect 25 pounds, so it's hard to remind myself that there's THREE in there! I still can't believe it sometimes...

  • I also highly recommend that you read Dr. Luke's book.

I think 60 lbs. is the average weight gain with triplets.  I gained 65.  Exercise is not necessarily recommended with triplets.  Eating a ton of healthy foods is.  You are going to gain a lot.  You have to in order to grow three healthy babies.  Eat when you are hungry.  Try to eat healthy but don't worry about it when it isn't.  Focus on protien and dairy.  Pretty soon your body is going to start telling you to rest.  Listen to your body and take it easy!

Oh yes, and drink a ton of water.  I drank between 80-100 oz. every day.

  • I just came across this as this is a question I often think to myself.  I have been reading Dr. Lukes book and read the recommendations in it for calorie intake and weight gain...my doctor says different though.  He told me 300 extra calories per baby (I am having triplets) is perfect.  I also walk twice a day.  I do daycare and walk them and my children to school and back Mon-Fri  my doctor advised I don't stop doing this to keep healthy.  He also stated not to run a marathon as I was running prior to being pregnant and really miss it :)

So how many on here stayed busy vs. didn't?  I am so afraid to do the wrong thing and jeopardize my babies.  I feel good.  I listen to my body and when I get achy or tired I sit or nap but I am a "busy" person to begin with.  Any advice would be appreciated :)

You sound very similar to me - I was a runner, stopped when I found out it was triplets and had a SCH which put me an limited activity for 2 weeks and after that I walked instead. However, as PPS have said - I would discourage you from doing this as well. I think when I went into PTL at 23w5d it was from too much activity (aka walking) and being dehydrated. So again drink, drink, drink lots lots lots of water. I gained 50 lbs and delivered at 28 weeks. Don't worry about what you're eating, try to be healthy but if you crave it eat it. I just put it in my head that my only job was to grow healthy babies - I could get back into shape after. Congrats and good-luck.

Be very careful - I know every pregnancy is different and everyone is different.
I have always been very active and am very intuned with my body, PTL was a surprise and is very scary. The most important thing is the babies right now.

  • I read dr Lukes book as well, Mostly because I started underweight.
The amounts are a bit excessive IMO.
    I carried 3 until 29.5 and gained 49#.

  • Just saw the part about working out. I stayed small..measured 41 wks with a singleton the day I delivered. Ran 1/2 marathons all the time b4 DD, hence the infertility. Resumed short 3 or 4 mile runs after DD. Did not work out 1 time after + triplet test. Needed to conserve calories anyway.
