High-Risk Pregnancy

casual comments

Does anyone else have to deal with this? We've been pretty open about how I can't seem to keep my babies inside of me past 37 weeks but not about any other issues and complications in pregnancy.

So my H's aunt made a flippant comment about how pretty soon I'd be 39 weeks and dying for my LO to come.

Um, if I made it to 39 weeks, I would do a dance of joy. And then my OB would induce me due to diabetes. lol and grr

Re: casual comments

  • So far, the most flippant comment I've gotten (and I'm sure others have, too) is, "oh, bed rest! That sounds like HEAVEN!"

I can understand where they're coming from, but 1, it's really not heaven at all and 2, it's not like I'm here on vacation, you know?

And being a chronically polite person, I'm usually stuck for a reply. What am I supposed to say? "You're right. It's fantastic. You should be jealous!"

On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.

  • Better than my MIL asking me on Friday when she came to pick up DD from the hospital if I was doing this all for the attention.

  • Helix, that is just vicious! Terrible. I wouldn't even know how to respond.

    That's terrible.

Unfortunately, a lot of people are not good at showing tact or empathy in situations that they haven't been in themselves or those in which they don't understand.

I got a lot of "but at least you can sleep!" when my baby was in the NICU.

  • People can be so insensitve sometimes.  When I was on bedrest with DS #1, my SIL would always say " at least you don't have to go to work." I would have rather been at work than sitting at home bored! Bed rest is not a vacation, I don't understand why people think/say it is.  I also heard when my baby was in the NICU "at least you can sleep." I didn't sleep very much at all when DS was in the NICU!  I have also heard " having trouble losing the weight?" I got pg very quickly after DS was born and of course I still had some weight on me, but someone said that to me a week ago, and my belly is clearly a bump now!!
