glucometers- accuracy?

Hi ladies!

I have GD and test my blood sugars 4 times a day.  I have been noticing that my numbers are on the lower end even then I eat things that should spike me.  For instance, we went to Olive Garden for Valentines dinner tonight and I got chicken alfredo, had 3 bread sticks, and some soup.   2 hours after finishing dinner my blood sugar was 90.  I was shocked it was so low!

So out of curiosity, I tested again about 30 mins later.  Blood sugar this time was 138!!!  Then A few minutes later tested again and it was 121!!

So I guess I am concerned with the accuracy of my glucometer and if it is really helping me control sugars.  I plan to call the doctors office Monday about this but it has me baffled and wondering.... Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: glucometers- accuracy?

  • I would ask the doctor and ask if they can test the meter for you or provide a solution to test it. Not sure what kind you have - mine is Accu-Check Aviva (sp?) and when I was first given it by my doc I was also given a small bottle of test solution. As I get new set of strips, he told me to use solution of the strips to ensure accuracy of the meter. I test 4x a day like you, but the inaccuracies you speak of have never happened to me. I've only been using it for a month and a half now.

  • I'll ask tomorrow when I call my numbers in.  I guess if they aren't happy with the numbers I'm getting they can provide some kids of fix.

I used my moms glucometer she just got last week and compared the 2 at the same time.  One was 17 higher (mine lower, hers higher) than the other but then when we tested her it was the opposite (hers lower, mine higher).  So something definitely does seem right.

    Thanks for your help!
