Trying to Get Pregnant

Open vs Closed Cervix

If this question was just asked, please just send me to the former link...but after some searching I did not find an answer!

This month I have tried every means necessary to chart fertility. I am taking my temp in the AM ( though I have had issues when DH wakes me up from a random night shift or I experience my new issue of just waking up at various times during the night), charting CM, checking cervix positions, OPKs, etc. As the month has gone on I feel confident deciding if my cervix is high, medium, or low and whether it is firm, medium, or soft (as I have had the opportunity to feel each one). I am not sure, however, how to figure out if my cervix is open.

I have never had any children btw.

Earlier in the month the opening most definitely felt like a slit. Now, it feels more like a dimple. It is definitely round feeling and like a tiny round dent. When I google, I have found some sites saying the dimple feeling is "almost open" and others say it is closed. I saw one site that stated an "open" cervix means you can actually fit the tip of your finger into hole (yikes!).

Any insight?

I have charted that the opening has been medium the past few days since I know it is more open, but not sure if it is truly "open."

Thanks girls!

Re: Open vs Closed Cervix

  • Yes, an open cervix is more pliable so it will be softer and more malleable as you push on it that it does feel as if it is opening. When the cervix is closed, it does not budge so easily. HTH

  • I'm pretty sure this is one of those things that varies from one woman to the next, and that you just need to compare your open (ovulation time) cervix to your closed (AF) cervix.  It might take a few months before you become familiar with what's normal for you at different points in your cycle. So, your "normal" open cervix may not be open enough to fit the tip of your finger, but that doesn't mean that it's not "open" for you.  Does that make sense?

That makes sense...thank you! I will continue to track it and see what happens and if  I actually ovulate this month!
