Natural Birth

Can I?...

I'm "moderate risk" according to my Dr. (past first trimester miscarriage) but I want so bad to do a natural home birth.  Will they determine that later in pregnancy or is it truely my choice?

  • I don't think a previous m/c alone would disqualify you from a HB.  If you want to have a home birth, you need to contact some home birth midwives.  If your doctor is like 99% of OBs in the US, he wouldn't support home birth for anyone--so it has to be your choice and you would have to take the initiative.

  • A home birth is not illegal in any of the 50 states, so it is always your choice.

However, you have to weigh the risks and benefits and figure out what is right for you.

I would contact some home birth midwives (or if you have any doctors who attend home births in your area, which is pretty rare) and talk with them about what exactly your condition is that is causing "moderate risk" and whether they would feel that a home birth would be advisable for you.

Most conditions that cause miscarriages do not have any bearing on labor/birth, but some of them can. And some miscarriages have no known causes anyway. So you just have to investigate more about your particular situation.

  • If the only thing putting you at risk is m/c it will have no effect on the birth.  Totally agree with Iris though, your doctor will not recommend.  frankly if you had no risks whatsoever your doc would not recommend

there are plenty of states where it is illegal for a mw who is not a CNM to do a home birth.

  • i agree with pp that you should find a homebirth midwife in your area and ask her about her screening criteria.  my ob/gyn was all excited about making me "high risk" due to my mom being a DES daughter (which has zero effect on my pregnancy).  however, my homebirth CNMs have very rigorous screening criteria and being a DES granddaugther is not among them.  so i'm "low risk" and planning another homebirth.

  • Make an appointment with a Certified Nurse Midwife who does homebirths.  She will asses your medical history then determine if a homebirth is a safe option for you.
