? about Meredith

Have you ever heard the name Meredith being shortened to Mary? It is our top girl name and I have always loved it. One of the reasons that we want to use it is that we each have a grandmother named Mary and like this as a tribute to them. (Ann will be the middle name, which is a tribute to both of our mothers and two other grandmothers) I am anti-nick name and want a name that will not get shortened. DH says that Meredith will get shortened to Mary. I don't know anyone named Meredith so I don't know if this is normal. What is your experience with this name?

I've never heard of anyone shortening Meredith to Mary.

I adore the name Meredith. I think it's just lovely. Too bad DH wouldn't get on board...

My really good friend from high school was Meredith...I called her Meri/Mary.

I've never heard of anyone shortening Meredith to Mary. As long as you always call her Meredith I don't see why someone would call her Mary. I love the name btw!

I've never heard of that as a nn for Meredith, but I could see it as a possibility. I know you weren't asking for suggestions, but what about Marianne? Two birds, one stone.

The Meredith's I've known were "Mer" and "Merrie".  Not Mary.

I've heard it shortened to Mere (like Mare) and a girl I went to HS with was called Ditha. Although, I don't see that one being as common.

My SIL's name is Merideth, spelled this way "Meri" is a natural nickname, although we've never used it seriously, just in a pet name, sort of way.

I love the name Meredith. I have a friend with a DD Meredith and they call her Mere (pronounced Mare) sometimes. I have never heard someone shorten it to Mary.

It would never occur to me to shorten Meredith to Mary. The few Meredith's I have know have just gone by Meredith.

One of my brother's ex girlfriends name was Meredith that she shortened to Mary.  And I love it!

I can see Meri or Mery being a nickname for Meredith. Mary - this spelling - would be a full name by itself. Personally, I have never met a Meredith, so I dunno if it's a real possibility.

Of the Merideths/Merediths I've known, maybe 2-3 had nicknames of "Meri" or "Mer". Some of the Merediths insisted on being called by their full name (just like some Natalies and Katherines I know). But, I think it's up to your daughter if she ends up wanting to be called by a nickname or not.

I have never heard of Meredith being shortened in any way. Its a great choice for a girl and I really think it would sound great with Ann. Good luck!

There's a little girl in our playgroup with the name Meredith and she's beautiful and has a great personality!  I've never heard it shortened to Meredith and the girl's mom has never mentioned it being shortened to anything either.

I love the name and have never heard it shortened to Meredith. We do call my best friend Mer but I don't think that was really the case when she was little.

My sister's name is Meredith, and we have always called her many nns. She mostly goes by Maddie or Mary. Sometimes we spell it Meri, but usually Mary. She loves that we all have silly nns for her.

If you love the name and the nn, do it!

(FYI, her middle name is Anne)

Yes my friends daughters name is meredith and the call her mary sometimes. i call her by her full name though usually.
