Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Problems napping-help please!

Hi Girls--I need a little advice. I have a 22 month old that has no problems napping at daycare on a mat but is refusing to nap at home unless we hold her. Today I tried letting her cry it out but she hysterically wailed for an hour and never went down.

Has anyone else had this issue? I guess at some point I'm just going to have to let her cry, but want to make sure there isn't a better idea I'm not thinking of!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Problems napping-help please!

  • My son is almost 22 months old and doesn't nap nearly as long at home as he does at daycare. It's 1:20 and he still isn't napping today, even though we tried. I just don't think we wear him out as much as daycare does, because his DCP says he crashes right after lunch.

  • Have you tried putting him on a nap mat for his nap at home?

  • Is there anything you're doing different at home than at daycare in terms of routine? Are you putting him down the same way? At the same time of day? I know some DCs have very dark sleeping rooms, and use some kind of white noise like a fan to block out external sounds. Could something like that help? Other than that, I'd just try to wear him out as much as possible in the morning - take him to an indoor playground or for a playdate somewhere (or just let him run around the mall or something - my DD loves doing that). Hopefully if you tire him out enough he'll just fall asleep no matter what!

  • My DD is an poor napper and early riser (ie 4:30 am 2-3 times a week).  We cannot put her down any earlier than 6:30 but she NEEDS to get her sleep.

She will sleep for longer than 45 min (we can even get 90 mins) if she sleeps in my bed with me.

So we "give her" the naps (i will start out in bed with her and do my upstairs cleaning or other work until she wakes up) but enforce proper sleep habits for night time sleep.

It sucks sometimes, but she will only be napping for so long and the attitude of everyone in the house with crankipants toddler is just not worth it.
