St. Luke's Baptist?

Anyone delivered at St. Luke's?  I have the choice of delivering at either St. Luke's or Methodist, and I've seen a lot of info about Methodist on here, but I'm wondering about St. Luke's.  It's still early, and I'm just collecting information, but any help would be greatly appreciated.  TIA!

Re: St. Luke's Baptist?

  • I have delivered at both!  St Luke's is a much smaller hospital, so it is hard to compare them.  I also paid for the upgraded luxury suite at both, so my experience is not typical.  If you are going that route though, the suites are much, much nicer at Methodist - but they cost more too!

I will also say they kept my baby in the nursery much longer at St Luke's.  They do all the pediatrician checks in the nursery every morning you are there (at Methodist they did this in-room in the suites anyway) and as it happened I delivered in the morning, so they kept him with me for almost 2 hours in the delivery room hoping the nursery would clear out but they still kept him over 2 hours when they finally took him!  They just had a bunch of babies from the day before and it took them forever to do the checks.  The irritating part was that I was nursing and they couldn't tell me when they were bringing him back.

I found the staff to be nice at both hospitals with a slight edge to Methodist.  I delivered without meds and I felt the delivery and immediately after was better at St Luke's, but my postpartum stay was better at Methodist.

    HTH!

  • OOOh, good to know.  Also, what was the medical student situation at each of the hospitals?  I am thinking that Methodist has them, St. Luke's doesn't, but don't know that for sure.  Thanks for the info!

I don't know about St Lukes - I was already 9 cm when I got there, so they didn't even have time to get my medical bracelets on, LOL.  There are med students at Methodist.  I did have a couple come in during the final part of delivery, but only because they appeared to be shadowing the NICU folks that came in just in case (Sarah was showing some distress right before delivery due to a knot in the cord).  I barely even knew they were there since it was only for about 5 or 10 minutes.

  • I delivered at St. Lukes when I had a choice between St. Lukes and Methodist just because my OB's office is located in the medical towers and I wanted the best chance of having her there.  Our next will also probably be delivered at St Lukes also since I tend to go fast during the pushing stage.

I prefered their delivery rooms to Methodist's when toured them.   St. Lukes also allows you to bring in a water tub if you have a doula, which I didn't use but could be good if you go med free.

I was in a regular room and their rooms are pretty small compared to Methodist.  I felt the staff was extremely nice overall.  I believe pedi gets to choose whether or not they examine the baby in the nursery or in your room so that might be something to ask potential pedi's about.   I was a little upset because they took my son for about 3 hours after he was born to do his bath.   I had requested they bathe him in the room and I know that they will do it but I just had a crummy nurse that day and didn't push the issue.  My nurse the second day was fantastic and a huge breastfeeding advocate and she even told me to make them do blood draws and such in the room, so you don't have to send your baby to the nursery but you have to push for it.

I did not see any medical students during my stay at St. Lukes.  I don't know if they don't have them or it's just that my OB doesn't have any.
