F/U sleep question: How long do you let LO nap during the day?

Charlie loves to nap during the day and will go past the 1-3 hour BFing recommendation if I let him. How long do you let LO sleep?

  • Well, dd already is back at birthweight so I let her go. She usually wakes at 4 hours if she goes over.

  • I let Gus sleep as much as he wants now, too.  At his check-up today he was past his birth weight, so his doctor said we don't need to wake him to eat.

  • My LO wakes every 2-3 hours to eat. At night time though, she will go a good 6hrs if I let her. (She also sleeps in my arm, so that's probably why.) When we took her to the ped yesterday as a follow up for her weight (she'd dropped 8oz at her 3day check up)she had gained 11 oz., so is now over her birthweight. I shared with the ped her feeding schedule, and I thought for sure the ped was going to glare at me/lecture me about her only waking 2-3 times at night, but she said because she's obviously gaining so well it wasn't a worry. :)

  • We were told to not go over 4 hours.  She usually wakes up after 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours.

  • Xander was preemie and was only 5lbs 6oz when I brought him home. They wanted him to wake up every 3 hours even if I had to wake him. He is up over 6lbs now and I am comfortable letting him go every four hours. He eats better when he wakes on his own.

I think that for a "regular" newborn, every four hours is fine. If you are worried about your milk supply... you could pump a little in between.
