Cloth Diapering

Change in water bill?

I'm kind of freaking out.  The city just stopped by to double check our water meter because it nearly doubled over the last cycle.  The guy said that they come and double check if they notice a huge change.

He didn't think the diapers would make that much of a difference and we also had a humidifier installed on the furnace but he didn't think it was that either.  He said to check everything (running toilets, leaks, etc).

This can't be from washing diapers, right???  The timing is horribly perfect (we just started CDing at the end of Dec).  DH is totally going to blame it on that.  Ugh.

Re: Change in water bill?

  • I didn't see a change in our water bill at all from cding.  In fact, it went down, which is weird.

  • I didn't see any difference when we started CD. Really, it's only a few loads a week, even if you account for extra rinses etc.

See if your toilet is leaking or a faucet or something. Recently my parents had an issue with one toilet seal not being tight and it running periodically/frequently.

Okay.  That makes me feel better.  Maybe it's a leak or something...  I am seriously dreading this convo with DH though.  He has been a huge pain this week.

  • Also keep in mind that they dont always check the meter EVERY single month. They are supposed to but sometimes they just estimate. So it could be a difference from the last several months just all of a sudden looking like a big charge.

Also make sure if you have a lawn irrigation system that you didn't have a pipe burst or anything over the winter and have water trickling out into your yard somewhere.

  • i don't have a water bill :p

  • I never noticed a huge change in our water bill when we started CDing.  There was more of a change when we had DD and I was always cleaning clothes :)
  • I'll be honest with you -- mine went up. However, it went up during a period of time that I had my daughter in general. Adding a baby, an extra person, and all the additional washing up that requires (everything from washing bottles to all that extra laundry in general to all those people staying with you at your house...) I don't think it was the diapers alone.

Also, it only went up $20 for the last quarter. We'll see what it's at next quarter, now that my stash is bigger, some people have gone home, etc. Still doing SO MUCH baby laundry, though. Diapers are 2-3 loads a week, but baby laundry in general is another 3 loads!

I would be okay with $20.... the city worker said it nearly doubled and we were paying $60-80 every few months.  I'm going to have DH check everything.  I really really hope it is something that can be fixed and not from the diapers.  I did do a lot of loads in the begining prepping things but now it shouldn't be more than a few extra loads a week.

  • Mine went up $35. But we were doing laundry at least once if not twice a day - for newborn. We are now doing a LOT less laundry now that we're in a non-nb stash and she isn't being changed as much. I expect it to go down next month.
