High-Risk Pregnancy

Echogenic Foci

Has anyone been told that their baby has this?  What was the course of action your OB did and what came of the follow up ultrasound?  Any and all information would be real comforting right now.

TIA!

Re: Echogenic Foci

  • My youngest son had one and it was found at the 20 week u/s. He is now a healthy 15 month old :) Our NT Scan results were great and there were no other markers, so we did nothing about it.

We just had our 20 week u/s with this baby on Wednesday and once again, they found one this baby's heart as well. Again, NT results and AFP results were very good and no other markers were found.

I should add that I had another u/s around 28 weeks with DS2 and it was gone.

It is one of those things that is very commonly seen today with the improved technology.

Did you do the NT? Did they find any other markers? If not, I wouldn't worry about it!

If you want to do something "easy," to watch it, just request another Level II u/s at the start of the 3rd trimester.

  • They found one on my DD's 20 week ultrasound.  We were sent off to a specialist and they offered to do genetic testing but we declined. They said it just slightly bumped up her chances of being born with downs but not to stress about it because they typically end up being nothing. Well, I was pretty stressed about it but I am happy to say that nothing came of it.  We now have a happy and healthy 11 month old.
  • Thank you so much for responding. It makes me feel better.

I did not have an NT scan and nor was I offered one. I did decline the quad screen due to no family history, not over 35 and the high error rate the test has. I wanted to wait for the 20 week anatomy scan to fnd out anything as not to stress out earlier than needed.

I am being sent to a high risk OB and my appointment is March 8th. My doctor said that it is sort of common and it usually isn't anything to worry about. There weren't any other markers and the baby is growing right on track. I just want to be prepared for whatever outcome that might be and talking with others helps.

  • They found one on our 20 week ultrasound. We were told that without any other markers for problems, there was absolutely no reason to be concerned and that they treat it as a sign to just take a good close look. Which they did - a doctor came in after the tech and spent 5 silent nerve wracking minutes checking over the heart.

After checking it out, they didn't take any action and aren't doing a follow up ultrasound, since they had a doctor right there to check it out. They specifically said it's not even something they follow at all (we just had the one in the heart and no other markers).

I don't have any concerns at all, personally, and I hope the same is true for you!

On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.

  • I had one this pregnancy, in my son's abdomen.  Turned out it was nothing at all - just an 'artifact' on the u/s.  We were sent to MFM and had a level II ultrasound, where he was cleared and deemed perfectly healthy.  :)

Now if only I get the same news :)
