Maybe dumb ? - tell me about your water breaking

I'm almost 39 weeks and 4 cm dilated... but haven't really been having any regular contractions, just random BH.  But I feel like I'm leaking -- this sounds stupid but I can't tell if its urine, discharge or my water breaking.  It doesnt smell like urine and its mostly clear.  I've been going to the bathroom every 20 minutes or so.

So tell me what you experienced for those of you who have had your water break.

I'm debating whether to call the OB or just chalk it up to baby pressing on my bladder and call it normal.

Re: Maybe dumb ? - tell me about your water breaking

  • Amniotic fluid supposedly smells very sweet, like cantelope.  If it doesnt have a smell it is probably just discharge which is totally normal.  I've been having really watery discharge for weeks and have taken to wearing pads because I was constantly running to the bathroom.

  • I would call my OB. He told me if I am having to change my pad more often than I need to urinate that I need to call.
  • We just went in to L&D the other night for this reason.  Is it worse when you're standing?  Also, if it's not stopping, and it's soaking through pads, it's most likely AF.  We were seriously only in L&D for 45 minutes - they just did a swab and tested it to see if it was AF, but they said it was good I went in, because if it had been AF, they want you to go in right away.  It doesn't hurt to call and find out what they think.

  • I too just went to L&D the other day for this.....Had it all day. My OB was at the hospital, as she had just done a c-section and I was there for about an hour. No AF but OB said it was great that I came in. She said that if it was, then we'd have a baby that day, as if you are leaking it could cause an infection. I told her I felt stupid coming in but she said never....always come in to see. Better to know than not.

  • I'm still waiting for my water to break, so I don't have any personal advice but my OB also said that if you lie down on your side for about 1/2 an hour and then stand back up it'll kind of gush if it's AF because it will collect. You could try that.

My water broke and this happened for me. I noticed a trickle when I woke up in the morning and went downstairs to send some work emails. I stood up about 20 minutes later and my pants were quickly soaked! It didn't really have much of a smell at all, and definitely didn't smell like urine.

  • I'm probably a dummy but my water had broken and I didn't know it. I thought I was leaking fluid so I did the old pad test and had zero saturation. Thought I must have been leaking urine so I went on about my business. Unfortunately, I had a slow leak (up high in the bag of water) and baby's head was plugging the leak so it was barely trickling. A BPP revealed that my fluid was extremely low and I was sent to the hospital. When in doubt, ask your OB though. You never know!
  • Hawki!  So excited for you!  Call your OB!  Are you there now?  Are you having a baby??
