Fruits from China

We buy fruit cups for Ava and most of them are from Thailand or China which we won't buy.  Last week we found two packages of pears, one from the US and one from China. I don't know about anyone else, but I am not going to buy fruit from there. Am I crazy?

Re: Fruits from China

  • What brands of fruit cup to you normally buy? I haven't brought any fruit cups lately (DH has though), so I'm going have to take a closer look at where they come from.

  • There are two main ones--Dole and one other that I'm drawing a blank on.

ETA-the other brand is Del Monte.

  • Juices are the same way - so you'll want to check the label for juice. Most juice boxes that I found, especially apple juice, are from china. I feel weird about it too, I mean, it's not like there is a shortage of apples in the US! I seem to find it more on kids juices than adults, but then a lot of orange juice comes from other countries too.

  • re:juice. We're the mean parents that don't buy juice..ha ha. Last week I wanted some pinapple juice but couldn't find any from the US so I didn't get any. Tropicana is another one that gets some of their oranges from other places and that makes me mad because I used to love their orange juice.

  • I am totally with you here. I often buy the fruit cups because they are SO easy to send to DC. I got excited when I saw Dole pears in real juice instead of syrup (I really try not to buy stuff in syrup). Then as I am feeding them to him I see "product of china" on the package. WTF? Do we not grow enough pears in this country?

I try not to buy anything from China. Their food standards are frightening.

  • How do you all feel about buying fruit that from Chile? The reason why I ask is because most of the fresh fruit that I see in the grocery store is being shipped from Chile, because it's in season.

  • We usually buy Dole or the Store Brand fruit cups. So I'll have to be a little bit more aware of where these things come from.

We don't buy it. It's a shame because grapes a lot of times are from there. We just wait until they have them from CA. Right now we are getting oranges and apples from the US.

  • I also try not to. One reason is because many other countries use pesticides that are banned in the US. yuck.

  • what's the issue w/ process fruit and juice from other countries?

  • I never thought to look at juice to see where its from - although we rarely buy it.  Same with fruit cups.

I broke down and bought grapes this week but we were dealing with some major consitpation and grapes are the one thing that I know will work with her and she won't turn them down.  It still took almost 12 hours for the grapes to kick in, but thats a whole other story.

We usually buy our fruit from the local farmers market, so we're surviving off of apples and pears.  I actually bought a 5 lb bag of oranges from Wegman's on Sunday and second guessed myself wondering if we would eat all of them or would they go bag.  Yeah, we have 2 left - all three of us have gone on a orange binge.

I feel like an idiot, but I don't know the issue either. Is it just the different food safety standards?

ditto. What is the issue with juices/fruit cups coming from other countries?  It's fruit, it's processed .. it was grown and harvested at some point.. what does it matter where that happened at?  I am really curious.. why does it bother you guys?

One main issue is the manufacturing process isn't as regulated. It's like when all the formula in China was tainted with melamine. It's not processed in the US with the standards that US has. The US has banned imports already of fish and shellfish from china because they found chemicals and antibiotics after processing. China's food standards aren't as strict as the US and that is scary because the US has it's own issues at times too.

That's a good point. On the other hand though, if we listen to all the warnings out there we couldn't eat anything without worrying .. US grown/made or not

  • So I was at the grocery store this past weekend and every single fruit cup is a product of China, Dole, Del Montee, Giant Brand. I actually caught myself reading almost every single thing I picked up.
