Kidney Reflux update

As some of you know DD has kidney reflux but it was a low grade and caught during my 34 week u/s. She has never had a UTI.

She was supposed to have a catheter test (VCUG) every year that basically they cath her and inject dye into her bladder and see how much goes to her kidneys. Well I didn't want her to have to deal with it last month when she was going to have to have the test so I put my foot down and said only an ultrasound. The u/s showed barely any kidney reflux so now she only has to have an u/s every year to check up on it!

So happy the invasive testing is over!

  • YAY!!!!  DS was diagnosed with the same thing during my 20 week U/S. We monitored all through the pregnancy and hopefully next week he has his LAST U/S and meeting w/ the Urologist (He'll be 2 in March)!

I am quite surprised that they wanted to Cath her even thought she had a "Low Grade' kidney reflux!  Thank goodness you put your foot down. No need to put her through that and having a cath could have given her a UTI!

Good job mommy!  I'm so glad DD is all better!

I didn't know your DS had it! Crazy how common it is

Did they check your new pregnancy for it? I heard that any future kids we have will have a strong chance of having it.

  • I didn't know that you were going through this, but am so glad that it is getting better. T&P that she continues to show great improvement and stays UTI free!

thanks. It is actually nothing big (if it is low grade) and is fairly common it just isn't caught very often b/c most people don't have later ultrasounds like I did since DD was measuring very small throughout my pregnancy. From what I was told it is hard to catch in the 20 week u/s so MrsMitch had an awesome u/s tech!

Higher grades are usually caught b/c a child will continue to have UTIs which can cause scarring. But anitbiotics usually clear it up or they can have surgery if those don't work which would be scary.

  • That is good news. Glad you were able to prevent an invasive, and seemingly unnecessary, test!

It is crazy how common. Friends of ours that had a baby at the same time had the same thing. Now, during hte U/S @ 20 weeks they noted that his Kidney was enlarged.  Then, that lead to tests after birth for kindey reflux.  DS had a very slight.  I pray this is the last U/S we have to do!!!

They did check me this time, but they told me it wasn't heriditary.  Interesting. Maybe at your later U/S they actually noticed the reflux instead of enlargement?  Everything measured fine on this baby.

  • oh that's great news!  An ultrasound is certainly much easier than a catheter!  Although I bet she is still a little wiggle worm.  :)  Would they have sedated for a catheter?
