First birthday cake?

Where did you get yours? I was planning to have a friend make it but I don't think she's making them anymore (she had started her own business).

What should I expect to pay? If it's $$ then I'll probably make our own or buy one from a place like Costco. I'd like to explore the option though.

Any recs?

Re: First birthday cake?

  • I made E's first birthday cake, and I don't think it turned out too badly. It's not something I'll do for every birthday (unless I take a cake decorating class or something), but I had fun and felt it was something special for her first birthday.

ETA: I guess what I'm recommending is doing it yourself. I was super proud that her mama made her first birthday cake herself! Also, we used the caterpillar head as her smash cake.

  • I've made both 1st and 2nd cakes.  We looked at using the Flying Cupcake, as friends had done, but for the amount of cupcakes we were going to need it was pretty pricey.  I think they have cupcake pricing on their website and they also do cakes.  Delicious but not in the budget for a kids b-day, IMO.

  • I love the caterpillar cake! Good job!

I'm no help, a friend made Rowan's (she has a cake business out of her house), but she's in Evansville. Someone here though I feel like linked to a lady who does cakes out of her house, too in Indy. I thought I bookmarked it but I can't find it now.

  • I've made both of Ellie's cakes for her birthdays, and will for this one too.  I did cupcakes both times.

    Here's last years owl cupcakes.

And for her first year the theme was just cupcakes, so I did pink and purple cupcakes with fondant balls on top.  I'd had another plan for the fondant, but it didn't work out, so I just rolled them in balls and threw them on top.  lol

  • For his first birthday I made a non-traditional (think dirt pie) type of cake.  For his 2nd birthday I made funfetti cake.  For some reason I'm not a big party planner so we didn't have elaborate or big parties.
  • For Jackson's first birthday, we did a big cupcake shaped cake, cupcakes of different flavors and a small smash cake/cupcake for him.  I think the total price was $75, and that included the sugar cookie favors we did.  That was from a bakery in New Albany, though.

  • If you're working, pat-a-cakes on 32 (just past hazel dell) has adorable cakes and they are pretty reasonable.  They have a lot of cute shaped ones--like they could make ballet shoes or something like that.  You could always get a smaller cake and then cupcakes.  Sam's club also has pull apart cupcake cakes.

  • We used Sugar Mamas in Mooresville. I think it was around $70 for a cake for 40 people and an additional smash cake

here is the cake that we had...candyland theme...

I love this cake!  We used Sugar Mama's for our wedding cake and wanted to use them for Clark's 1st bday as well but I guess the owner was getting married herself so she closed down for several weeks during of course the time we would have needed the cake!

For the smash cake we did one from walmart:

But then we did homemade rainbow cupcakes for everyone else - blue, red, and yellow with white icing on top and sprinkles.  They turned out very cute.

the smash cake from Walmart is ADORABLE!!! I am sure it was really cute! I think Walmart has really good cake. The cake she did for us was the week after her wedding. You should have seen her wedding cake. It was INCREDIBLE! We used them for our wedding as well. Maybe you can do sugar Mamas for birthday number 2!

I bet her wedding cake was awesome!   I really want to use sugar mama's again for something.  May see if she'll do a bridal shower cake for my sister's party that I'm hosting.
