TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

RE appt scheduled

I'm going in on February 24th.  What do I expect at a first visit?  I was a bit overwhelmed, so I missed a lot of what she said.  I remember that there'd be a vaginal ultrasound, but not much else.

I know that they're already checking with my insurance to see what is and isn't covered.  From what my insurance told me last night, all oral meds are covered.  Injectibles are covered with pre-auth.  Everything else, since infertility treatment is not specifically excluded on my plan, is covered at the normal rates with pre-auth.  Granted, the girl on the phone didn't sound the most confident, so it will be interesting to see what they say to my insurance company.  I hope this really is the case, since I have low copays and no coinsurance.

As much as I've been wanting to see an RE, I have to admit I'm terrified.  I know that this is going to (hopefully) get me closer to my take-home baby, but I can't help but feel like I've stepped into a pro basketball game when I can't even catch a ball.  Am I making any sense?

Re: RE appt scheduled

  • They will probably do bloodwork also. Mine did bloodwork and dh and I, they will probably schedule a SA for dh. They will go over what your insurance covers, your history and will come up with a game plan for you. They may also schedule you for an HSG.

  • Oh good luck! It is a scary step but hopefully soon it will lead to your take home baby. At my first appointment the dr. went over my and dh's history, did blood work, and an u/s.

I do have a funny story about a friend of my SIL's- they were sitting and talking with the RE and he asked him for a sample- told him there were cups in the bathroom so he produced a semen sample, he hands it to the doctor and the doctor says "what's this?" He says "a sample". The doctor says "I wanted a urine sample". Then he needed a pen to sign something and the doctor told him he could keep the pen! Embarrassed Makes me laugh every time I picture it. So when your sitting there scared in the office, I hope this makes you smile!

  • Good luck with your RE appointment.

Lmao, I am going to remember this!  And remind my DH to ask what kind of sample will be needed, lol.

  • My first appointment was more like a consultation. I spent almost an hour talking to the doctor going over my medical history and his recommendations. Then I met with a nurse who thoroughly went through all the paperwork and the schedule for my first cycle. I wish I would've taken notes, because once I left it was very hard to remember everything he said. It might help if you do that. Good luck!!

  • Mine did bloodwork - AMH, karyotyping - and a SA and sperm DNA fragmentation testing on DH. He also always gives you a visit with LaWanda to get the lay of the land at the first visit. Other than that, lots of talking. then lots more talking at the follow-up to go over the test results.

You may want to consult with your insurance and ask if testing is covered.

  • My first RE appt. was also more of a consultation - questions about DH and my history, etc...  She did also do a pelvic exam.  No b/w or u/s until the next month - started with CD 3 basics at that point.

  • At my first appointment we went through our history, all the available options, came up with a tentative game plan, did a u/s, set up b/w for both of us, set up SA for DH, and set up a HSG and SHG for me. Our game plan was injects with IUI so the nurse also went over that process with us again after the meeting with the doctor. They also took our picture for our file. I don't know if every place does that but we were not prepared for it lol. After a long day at work we both looked like hot messes (you know, because what's really important in all of this is how you look in your file pic). GL and let us know how it goes!
