School-Aged Children

After school programs?

DD is in kinder and the school just started offering an after school program that is free. It's educational and fun all wrapped into one pretty little package. The program would like the kids to attend at least 3 times a week and they have to stay until the end, which is 6:00. DD goes to bed at 7:30.

We are thinking about signing my DD up for the program, but my mom is worried about when she will be able to be a kid and her being at school from 8:30-6:00 at least 3 times a week. Part of the reason we are looking into it is because we will probably move within the next year or so and she will change schools when we do that. The new school will be 20-30 minutes east of the town we are in now and we wouldn't ask the grandmas (the grandmas currently split the week picking DD up from school....my mom picks her up 3 days and xmil picks her up 2 days) to drive that far to pick dd up so she would probably have to do the after school program at that school any way.

Anyone have any experience with after school programs? How do your kids do with it?

TIA!

Re: After school programs?

  • I like the idea of the afterschool program but don't love that the kids are expected to be there until the end of the program at 6pm, that is just really late for me.  My kids, ages almost 3 and 4 1/2, go to sleep at 7 or 7:30 and we have other activities after school 2x a week so it just seems like a lot to me.  If she could be there for part of the time, I would be all for it.

  • DD loves her afterschool clubs and stuff too!

Is it possible to adjust her bedtime at all? We did that for DD so on "late nights" she goes to bed a little later but also sleeps in a little later the next morning.  It means she's rushing a bit before school, but if you have everything ready the night before, maybe it won't be such a big deal?

    Good luck!
