I have been having the worst time with PIO this cycle. I didn't think it was too bad for my fresh cycle--but now, not even a week into the injections, I'm dying. I have at least 5 large (think peach-pit) knots in my bum, I had the doctor look at it the other day because I was in soooo much pain...I just don't know what to do.
Here's our routine:
I warm the vial in my pants pocket till it feels warm.
Draw out the dose with a large-gauge needle, then switch it to a new smaller-gauge (22) needle.
Give it to DH, he swabs the area and lets it dry, then pulls the skin taut, darts it in, pulls back, and injects.
Pull out the needle, wipe away the oozing oil and blood, put on a bandaid since I've been bleeding lately, then rub.
(The rubbing hurts soooo bad that the nurse told me I could just do laps around the house--by using the muscle, you are encouraging it to dissipate.)
Then heating pad for at least 15 minutes.
Used to be that I felt a pinch when it went in and then the injection was painless. Now I feel a burning the entire time he's injecting. It hurts to walk, my pants rub on the lumps and that hurts, can't carry a grocery bag over my shoulder nevermind the 30-pound cardiac monitor I lug around at work!
I'm trying to tough it out but I'm at wits end. I cried through the whole shot tonight.
Any advice? Please??
Re: PIO please help!! (long)
I'm so sorry this is such a nightmare for you this time. My routine is pretty much identical to yours, so I'm no help there. My nurse did mention, though, that most people who get bumps/feel pain are actually doing the injection too low down. I had her draw Sharpie targets (it's hot, let me tell you!) and mine are really given almost in my hip. Maybe you can change up where you're doing them?
I hope you find something to help improve the situation. Hang in there.

Thanks for the suggestion--the doctor said we should try them up a bit higher and to the side of where we were going, so now they fall right below my hip bone I think (I have bum dimples, they are right to the side and above my cute dimples). I have no targets this time but lots of bruises to landmark with!
My only thought is that maybe my a$$ was still all screwed up from round one--so its more sensitive and lump-prone this time?
I'm so sorry! I did endometrin last time, and I'm going to do PIO this time. I am scared to death of them!!! I did have someone tell me to buy a small vibrator (I know I know) and actually put it on the area right after you give yourself the injection. That helps spread out the medicine and reduce the bump.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes....
Good excuse to buy a vibrator, I guess!
Ha!
I'd ask your RE about possibly using progesterone in ethyl oleate, Schraft's carries it & it was not painful at all for me going in & I never had any sort of lumps/knots in the muscle. My nurse told me that a lot of the patients at my practice have been having 'good' experiences with it.
GL!
mine are going almost even with my hip bone, maybe even a little above it. And much closer to the outer edge of my body than the middle. Hopefully a change in location will help.
A vibrator, huh? Yes, I will have to try that. But gee...I'll need to buy one because I would never have something like that in my house, now would I?
Edited to add: I just mentioned the vibrator suggestion to DH - he asked "where do you put it, on your skin?" I pointed out that it wouldn't help to have a vibrator on your junk when the shot goes in your ass and he said "well, it might take your mind off it!" Hee hee.

I had overheard the nurse mentioning the "non-oil PIO" to someone else yesterday... I think I will call tomorrow and ask if it's available. Something's gotta give.
Thank you all--you are wonderful.
Amber I love it!
HA
My husband and I are both paramedics and we administer IM drugs on a regular basis as well. We were always taught to aspirate and I shudder at the thought of getting a whole mL of oily PIO into a blood vessel--but I'm considering it for tomorrow....
Thanks!
Alison! I was going to come to you for my PIO pep talk! You are scaring me to death.
No really though, I hope it gets better!
