XP: Question about Ergo and infants

We are planning to get one soon, but I really, really hated the infant insert when I put it on in the store.  Does anyone know if there is a weight limit that it is recommended for, or if the baby just needs to have good head control, or if it is a phsyical/bone structure thing for waiting until 4 months to go without it?

DS has really good head control and weighs over 14 lbs, so I'd really like to try the Ergo without the massive insert, but I can't figure out exactly what the reasoning is for waiting till 4 months.

  • I thinl on mine it says 4 months or 15 pounds.

  • I don't know.  DS is over 17 lbs at 3.5 months and we use it without the insert.  He has great head and torso control and can sit on his own though.  We still keep his legs in rather than the knees up, straddle position he will use after 4 months as recommended by the store owner.

  • I had to stop using the insert before 4 months because E was too big to be crammed into the insert & then into the Ergo. It was fine.  I would just make sure that it wasn't digging into his legs or spreading them in an uncomfortable way. Does that make sense? The insert makes the width that the legs are spread a little narrower. But honestly by 3 months DS was absolutely fine without the insert.

  • Never used the insert at all, and I started using the ergo around 2 months. But I hate wearing it on the front so I shelved it and have been using my Mei Tai until she's big enough to try back carries.
  • I'm pretty sure the Ergo book says "head control"

  • my daughter is 4 months and about 15 lbs. but i usually still use the insert. it seems like she likes it better because she sits up higher in it. she also acts like it's really comfortable and smiles every time i put her in it so i'll probably use it until it's too hot or she grows out of it.

i guess as long as your son has good head control and seems comfortable when you put him in it in the correct positions, don't worry about the insert.

  • I took the little pillow out of the bottom of the infant insert and put that under DS until he was about 4 months old. It helped put his legs in a more comfortable position. Without the insert his legs were spread a little too far for my/his comfort.
